Accepted Students Day

What is Accepted Students Day?

April 14th

I thought there would a more detailed description of what's in store on Admitted Students Day but this was the only statement on the W&M Activities Calendar (below). Perhaps newly admitted students will be receiving an update as the date approaches.

"April 14 9:00am | William and Mary Hall | Selected Events, College Events
Welcome to the more than 850 students who have been accepted for the class of 2011.

Registration at William and Mary Hall beginning at 9 a.m."

This is the first time I will be attending as well (I was a Spring transfer last year) and I will be hosting a table in the afternoon. W&M clubs and programs will be advertising their services at this event along with a plethora of scheduled events and activities. This can give new students an idea of what is offered at the college. Soccerguy, if you don't mind, what else (at least in the past) was present during this event - talks, food, performances, etc.? Thank you!

from the things that are at the same time, obviously you have to pick and choose.

Question, do parents go to any of the activities or should my husband and I find a nice table outside a restaurant somewhere and drink coffee while we wait for our daughter?

She was accepted into the Monroe Scholars program so there's something after the ASD stuff finishes up and we know there are a couple of parental-type things to attend with that.

atrmom, parents are welcome at most things, I believe.

The first opening session will definitely be full of families. Familes are definitely welcome on the tours. Families are provided lunch, I do believe (this is one of the reasons you need to RSVP). If the parents are paying for the computer, you might be interested in the myNotebook program (though I don't like this program because it turns people off from getting macs, though you still can). If financial aid is an issue, the parents would probably be interested in the Fin Aid office. Parents are more than welcome for the department presentations. And they have the Administrator Panel in the last time slot for parents, which coincides with a Student panel for your student to attend. Of course, you do not need to do anything. You could stroll around Colonial Williamsburg if you like too. But you are most definitely welcome.

You are invited to the lunch, and it costs $5 per guest. The students' get their lunches free.

My S got an email with an RSVP link.

We've RSVP'd to both, thanks for the info! I just wasn't sure what to expected. Our son goes to the Naval Academy which is completely different experience, he went to school with a calculator, cell phone and that's it! So in a way, I feel like we're new to all this college stuff.

When did your son get the email, natrag? Daughter hadn't received one, to my knowledge. Seems several of her schools have accepted student day on the 14th.

Not sure whether it was an email, now that I think about it. It could have been something in his acceptance package he got last week in the mail. I think he set up an account in the accepted students part of the W&M website, and that's where the invitation was. I can ask him tonight.

On a whim, I called the W&M Admissions Office and the young man I spoke to said that the RSVP's were just to give them an idea of numbers, they aren't name specific. No emails were sent, but there were links in the packet that came with the acceptance letter.

OK....I knew she knew the date of the admissions...must have been in the accceptance package. Thanks!

atr - when we went 4 years ago (S is graduating in May :() I remember we split up and I went to some programs that interested me - everyone just sort of wanders around, in and out of various buildings.

ctmom, thanks, that's probably what we'll end up doing. D is so excited about coming to W&M...we're even making a bookstore run Saturday on our way down to the Outer Banks for spring break (we live outside of DC). Enjoy graduation and good luck to your son.

atrmom- I still love buying WM "stuff" at the bookstore!

I have so enjoyed his 4 years in Williamsburg - more so than S as I never had to do any schoolwork or take any exams ;)

Graduation will be bittersweet - just reading about the candlelight ceremony gives me goosebumps.
The time flew by...now its your turn!

the Campus Shop also sells W&M gear. It's about a block from the bookstore.

the bookstore was in a little one story building next to Taliaferro when I was in school. What is in that little building now?

And is Taliaferro still a residence hall?

I don't know what's in the little one story building now, but I know that Taliaferro is still in use. The bookstore is now a Barnes and Noble on DoG Street in CW.

Taliaferro was a sweet little dorm to live in when I was a freshman. It was really small and they stuck all the quiet people there, and I had a bunch of the more studious scholarship athletes on my hall like Kurt Wrigley, who held wide receiver records for a while, adn Brant Weidner, who was the starting center on the basketball team, which was actually really good back then (1979-83).

The only bad thing was walking to 8am PE at W&M Hall!

Edited: I just looked up Brant Weidner, and he actually played for the Spurs in 8 games in 83-84. I never knew that before.

Taliaferro is still in use. No AC, holds 49 freshmen and 2 RAs. I lived there freshmen year.

The small one story building next to Taliaferro which used to be the bookstore was recently renovated and will become the new Admissions building at some point soon.
