Accepted Students Orientation

anyone that went in the past years noe if they provide a place to spend the night? a dorm or discounted hotel or something? if not u think i can request one thru email?

does that mean we have to be there by 8? when does the first event start?

Other than Admitted Student’s Day, does NEU give like college-specific information sessions and tours? I won’t be able to make the CBA on the 20th, but I’m still interested in learning first hand about CBA and the honors program.

They have a specific tour time (I believe once a week) for engineering students, but there isn’t any college-specific info really given out at any of the normal tours and info sessions. If you go on a tour of International Village, the home of the freshman honors housing, they should be able to answer more in depth questions about honors but it’s not a promise.

And no you don’t get to stay in a dorm-- that is for summer orientation only. If Northeastern had extra space to fit in every prospective student, we wouldn’t have a lottery system for housing. haha (which I totally got screwed on this semester)

I actually got an today e-mail about Business Days at CBA.

where is the farthest someone is coming from?

The colleges might, but I was referring to from the Admissions office. I’m curious, what kind of stuff does it say you can do on the “business days”? I’m in CAS and we don’t have cool days to my knowledge-- at least not yet anyway.

Actually, should say I’m in College of Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as the College of Sciences… I don’t like it, it’s not as simple as saying CAS.

For everyone wondering when the orientation starts, you should’ve gotten a letter in your mailbox with the detailed itinerary

Registration starts at 8am and the official orientation starts at 9:30am

I just got an email from Admissions saying (what you all might already know about) that we are now offering Business and Arts, Media & Design information sessions, in addition to the Engineering, CCIS and Health Science days we have offered in the past.

You can also stop by the Admitted Student Information Sessions every Monday, Thurday and Friday at 9:30 AM from February through April, which are (obviously) geared towards students who are already accepted.

So if you can’t make it to Accepted Students day, try and check out one of these special info sessions!

If I send my son he has two options…fly all night and arrive at 7:10 am or arrive the night before and get a hotel I guess. If he came in on the 21st at 7:10am how much travel time is involved and is there public transportation or must he get a cab? If he arrives the night before which are the best hotels closest to NEU? If he goes to catch a flight after the orientation what would be the earliest flight out he could take…allow for travel time to airport, traffic, snow etc… Thanks so much!

Limbo, I’m coming a long way too and my parent decided to fly my up the night before and stay at The Midtown Hotel which is literally not even a block from campus. I know that there is a public transportation system but I’m not sure where/if it connects to the airport, so a cab might be necessary.

limbo, I’m not a local Bostoner, but I can give you some info. for the hotel and subway. From the “T” (subway) map, silver line to Tufts medical center, there are a lot of hotels in that downtown area, like Courtyard Tremont hotel, Radissons etc., from there you can take orange line to the Ruggles station right at Northeastern U. silver line may or maynot directly get to the Tufts New England medical center, but I’m sure you can get a “T” map from the airport or ask service desk over there.

BTW, from the NEU website: Friday, Feb 19: College of Arts, Media and Design and College of Computer and Information Sciences; Saturday, Feb 20: Bouve’ College of Health Sciences and College of Business Administration
Sunday, Feb. 21: College of Engineering, College of Social Science and Humanities, and College of Sciences

You can go to mbta.com and find a route to go from your hotel to the campus

Thanks all! Do any of you know if he leaves after orientation Sunday, how far in advance should he leave to allow for travel time etc…? Thanks!

From Northeastern, I always figure an hour to get to the airport. That is of course NOT including the time you should be at the airport prior to your flight, etc etc. It doesn’t take nearly as long as an hour, but I once only factored in 30 minutes and then it took ages for the orange line to come, then ages for the red line to come, then the silver line got backed up and then it was really slow because of the snow… I made the flight, but I was really stressing during security check and when I walked up to the gate they announced the start of boarding. So I factor in an hour for travel time, and then get Starbucks at the airport.

Or you could take a cab, which is of course less time and (usually) more reliable. I don’t like doing that because I’m cheap and also you have to pay the tolls to go to the airport, which can be stiff.

Rumor has it youll also get 2 free tickets to go to the bball game on Saturday. The game is on ESPN 2, so it should be packed. I think you will have the option to purchase additional tickets at a reduced $5.

We stayed at the Midtown hotel last year for accepted students day. It came highly recommended, was very convenient and in-expensive. However, they called our home number while we were making the 4 hour drive up to make sure we were coming, and when we didn’t answer, gave away our room. Because I insisted, my son and I finally ended up in a room with only one bed, so they had to put in a roll away cot so that my then 18 year old son and his mom weren’t in the same bed.

But the accepted students day was good and worthwhile, I recommend it.

I hope the snow stays on the ground until this weekend! It’s really pretty here right now.

I looked at the admitted student welcome days for RD (hoping d is accepted!) that are in April and we would not be able to attend on the engineering weekend, but would be able to attend the weekend before which has other schools/departments. Did any ED accepted students go to a welcome day for a school/dept. other than the one they are interested in. Was it worthwhile since it wasn’t your intended major?

We went to the ED Engineering Day and found it very helpful…got to meet some of the profs, met with the Women in Engineering program and a department specific session. There’d definitely be some holes in the day to fill in if you went to a day that wasn’t engineering, but we also got a session on the honors program, got to tour residence halls, ate at the dining hall, and toured campus. There were also sessions on financial aid and the such.
Sorry I can’t offer the perspective you asked for, but if you haven’t done the tours of campus, res. halls, dining halls, etc., I think you’ll find value in the day. And if you already have, a fresh look may help your daughter decide if NEU is right for her. Good luck.
