Accepted Students Weekend

Anyone going from outside of South Carolina?

Vitrac,
At this point in time I am. I registered online. I am waiting to hear about the Honors Program before I make my flight reservations though as that is held on Friday. Are you going?

At this point my D and I will be there too from CT. Hoping for good weather.

We are going from New York. It’s our second visit. Crunchtime!

S and I will be traveling from NJ.

My daughter and I will also be going, just on Saturday though. We’re also from NJ (Atlantic County). She’s very excited about getting into the Honors Program and getting her scholarship letter today. This is the first school out of her 8 - all in the south - that she is seeing and she is nervous. She so wants to LOVE it but is a little concerned about ratio of girls vs boys! She’ll have to see for herself. We’ve heard great things about the area though. Can’t wait for our first visit!

NJ_Mom, Congratulations on your daughter’s acceptance to the honor program! Did she just find out today? I applied but have yet to hear anything. They did tell me it is “rolling admissions” to Honor Program. Did she get the scholarship info in the same mailing? Was anything posted online? Thanks!

nj_mom-regarding the ratio issue I can only say that when you are there you would never know it was an issue. Maybe it feels imbalanced when sitting in a classroom setting, but out on the streets, watching students in restaurants, playing frisbee, etc., you’d never know.

HobT10 - my daughter was admitted in December (15th sort of rings a bell). she had applied for the honors college late November and first week in January, I called the school to find out when she might be notified as we thought it was rolling. Turns out, they had her teacher recs, but never received her application. I emailed it immediately and waited on the phone to make sure it was received. I was told they would review it the following week and she would hear back from the honors college one way or another by the end of January. She did. The scholarship letter came today. So altogether, 3 totally separate notifications - all via mail. Nothing online.

Vitrac - thanks for the info about the male/female situation. That had her a little worried. she also was originally looking at big rah rah schools like Clemson, UNC, Bama, Auburn. Will have to see if Charleston has enough school spirit for her. Of course, being near the beach could solve that dilemma entirely.

CofC certainly has a different feel to it than those big football schools. While it is near the beach, it’s not THAT near. We took a cab to the closest one and it was a beautiful ride and the beach and town were a alot of fun. Charleston is on water, but it’s not beach.

Re: the beach. CofC has a shuttle that runs to Folley Beach, so it is fairly easy to get to the beach, even without a car.

Re: M/F ratio. The Citadel is right down the street, is nearly 100% male and helps make up for the male/female imbalance out side the classroom.

CofC has the best “customer service” attitude of any of the schools my s looked at or applied to. If you have any questions, call them.

we’ll be flying in from rhode island…daughter has to decide between c of c and jmu. entirely different schools. she is also waiting on delware but wont hear anything til mid-march. while she loved charleston when she visited last year, she also wants a big rah rah type of school which it isnt.

Jbevangelista-sounds like she should’ve applied to Penn State!

i agree, penn state sounds like a perfect fit…ah well. excited to visit charleston next month!

Stillnadine-Thanks for the info on the shuttle to the beach. Folley Beach was where my d and I visited. We participated in an informational weekend at CofC last Spring and no one even mentioned a shuttle! All that nonsense about academics!!!

The cab driver who took us to Folley was one of the highlights of the weekend. He was quite a character and a self described libertarian. My d, a liberal New Yorker, was astounded by his views as well as his charm and we had a lively debate both to and from the beach. After we got home, she e mailed him and asked him to put in writing his views on abortion (pro-choice!), guns (pro-guns!) and gay marriage (personally repulsed but …pro!). I think that for us being among different kinds of people of different political persuasions is one of the cool things about CofC.

Agree completely about the customer service aspect. I have called/emailed a few times, afraid that I was being a pest. But everyone was helpful and friendly. That meant alot to me. Some schools are just awful in that regard.

all of us here on cc should try and meet up during the weekend!

Is everyone going to the dinner on the President’s lawn?
