I was wondering, was anyone (or does anyone know someone who was) accepted SCEA last year? What were their stats and activities?

Sorry, I typed this post twice. My computer was being spazzy.

This girl at my high school was accepted...I don't know any of her scores but I'm sure they were high enough. As far as she goes she finished fifth in her class (although my school doesn't rank) and she had awesome grades of course (not straight A's though). For extras she was a big theater/singing person and had alot of science awards...

..the advice she gave me was the essays..she said her essays were the best writing of her entire life (gulp)

Interesting. Do you know how her essays were? Casual tone or formal? Funny or serious? (My sorts are casual funny and my long is casual serious.) What did she do with theater/music?

We had three from our school accepted SCEA last year -- none of them went. Two of them were a no-brainer (1600, 1st and 2nd in class...) -- I think people would have been shocked had they not been accepted. People were pretty surprised at the other one, though. I wouldn't have guessed he would have gotten in...you never know...

Interesting. Tell me about them? What were the 1600 kids' ecs? And what was the other student like?

I wish I knew -- I never really knew either of them. I just know the scores and that they both ended up somewhere else (Princeton, I think).

There's a suspicion that Stanford has "black-balled" our school because we've had so many accepted kids end up not going...

My daughter was accepted SCEA last year and currently is a freshman (and by the way, absolutely loves her experience so far--feels that Stanford for undergrads provides the perfect blend of warmth/nurturing with all of the opportunities of a major research institution). She had a 1560 SAT I, a couple of 800's and a 760 SAT II, class rank 5/650, and only one significant EC--theater. She had not achieved greatly in this area, but had been deeply involved since early childhood and had done a lot of tech, acting, singing, and leadership. Essays were kind of quirky though formal, and when the acceptance letter came, the Dean of Admissions specifically mentioned the most quirky one, which happened to be the roommate one. Good luck everyone!

That's exciting! I'm glad your daughter is enjoying Stanford - I haven't heard any horror stories so far. What were her essays about? My roommate essay was also my strangest: I talk about writing humor columns and forcing my best friend to read them. It doesn't sound strange, but it's fairly funny (in my opinion). No one else has reenacted Patrick Henry's address to the Virginia Convention about their fear of moths.

My son was accepted SCEA also last year and he also loves Stanford. He was 1/350, SAT 1470, many EC's, 2 sports, part time job. He worked very hard to be accepted to his "dream college." His essays were casual and humorous. I have seen many well qualified applicants be rejected...I almost think it's luck of the draw? It is hard to say what admissions is looking for. After visiting this fall though it did seem that the student body is a bunch of amazingly well rounded students. Good luck to you.

Thanks bahamamama! Good luck to your son! I hope I'll be there too!

Hmm, this is probably a dumb question, but what do you mean by SCEA?

single choice early action

jellybean: I never read her essays. But, as far as other pieces by her they were usually witty and humorous. She might have gone serious with one of them, but knowing her they were probably really up-beat. For theather she was just really active in school productions and lots of things like that. But, she really had a deep passion for it, so I'm sure that came through.

Thought of the Day: The five people I know that were accepted to Stanford in the past 4 years all had really bad eyebrows. OBVIOUS correlation...Grow them out while you still can, children!

Ha ha! Thanks meao! I'll be sure to stop tweezing.

Bad eyebrows!?

Maybe I'll get in after all...

I knew a guy who got in SCEA two years ago. He was a techy guy and really sucked in English.
1350 SAT, 800M, 550V.
SATII writing 520. IIC800 Physics800 Chem800 Bio800
AP (11th grade, dunno 12th grade) CalcBC, PhysB, Chem, CompSciAB, Econ all 5
that year he took IBS-2 Japanese and got a 7.

I read his essays. They suck. Lots of grammatical errors and a really generic topic.
I admit he's pretty smart in science and math. I guess Stanford needs people like him.
God knows how the hell he got in...

meao....i think you go to my school....i think you sit next to me in english class....haha, hello!!

that is, if you're talking about maddy....

Is this that other Harvard elitist? Ni hao! crazy..you guys are everywhere...

(yea, talking about maddy...)
