He's also participated in about 30 charity runs over the past few years.

Probably no money, but it's his first acceptance..... yeah

Tulane got on the list because a bunch of his friends go there and love it (good a reason as any). Congratulations to all who got in!
We would love it if he went there so we'd have an excuse to visit one of the coolest cities in the country. Quickie Stats: 2000 on SATs, varsity sport, editor on school paper, 9 years on second sport, 3.7 weighted, 8 AP courses. Great English and History student, wonderful writer -- absolutely terrible math student. See, there's hope for the mathematically challenged.

My son was accepted this morning! Yeah! Hope this is the first of many acceptances.

For all of you that have letters already, how long did it take from your online acceptance to actually receiving your letter?

I'm going crazy waiting to see if I got a scholarship offer or not!

We received the actual letter prior to the online status changing to say accepted. My son applied the first week of September, and about 4 weeks later he received a letter saying he was accepted with a merit scholarship. A couple days later, the online status changed to "Congratulations; bla, bla, bla....

polkahard- mine was the same day as the online bit, but then again I live in New Orleans so it can't take that long to get a letter from Tulane to my house.

Is it possible to get accepted online tomorrow or is the admissions office closed? What about Saturday?

I applied online on 10/31 and my counselor sent everything on 11/1

bump ten characters

rocafelton, you'll probably hear back next week or the week after. It takes a while for them to get everything.

" mine was the same day as the online bit, but then again I live in New Orleans so it can't take that long to get a letter from Tulane to my house"

Johnson,
Since you live there...how about some input on safety, recovery from Katrina, and the interaction students have with the city?

DS got his letter today. It came within 5 days of his online notification, and Thanksgiving was this week. No money, but we didn't expect any.
I remember reading last year that they sent out very nice acceptance certificates. This was just a letter. They probably used the "certificate" money on the personal apps.

My son received a large envelope with 2 pieces of paper in it. 1st was the acceptance letter which also mentioned the merit scholarship he received. The 2nd was a list of the other scholarships and such that he could apply for. There was no "Certificate" or anything special in the envelope.

Well, I can only give a high school seniors perspective, but I really don't feel "unsafe" here. You just need a good dose of common sense to avoid the sketchy areas, to remember to lock your car (which should be done anywhere, not just here), that sort of thing. A good majority of the crime here is drug related, so it's definitely not impossible to avoid.
As for recovery, some areas look the same as they looked pre-Katrina, and some clearly don't. The area around Tulane is as beautiful as it always was, but the city also offers some great community service opportunities everywhere (my school participated in a Habitat House about a mile from Tulane; New Orleans is, and has always been a city where one street can be gorgeous yet the one next to it not so much). Additionally, some areas are having more trouble recovering than others, but I wouldn't let that be a deciding factor for whether or not to chose Tulane.
As for interaction with the city, New Orleans is just that- a city; there's no hostility (that I've seen) at all towards or from students. There's also a lot of general positive vibes from the school because of how involved Tulane students have been with some recovery efforts. There is the occasional LSU v. Tulane feud, but I wouldn't really count that. If there is any hostility towards the students, my only guess would be directly around the school because of frat parties- I have a few friends about 2 or 3 blocks away, but I've never really heard any complaints. Additionally, since Tulane and Loyola are direct neighbors, the schools sort of seem to blend together to natives unless someone is an avid fan of one or the other. As for another bit, since nearly all private and public schools require uniforms, we tend to stick out a lot more than any of the local university students do on a daily basis... I only ever recognize a Tulane student as being one when I right near campus or if they're wearing something like a school shirt.

I found I got accepted today! So yay...! I don't know when to expect the actual letter, since I live in France...but hey! At least I know I got in. Woohooo...

Congratulations...
Yeah I haven't gotten my letter either, even though i live near Louisiana its been two weeks since my online acceptance. =/

Its been over 2 wks since DS saw on-line acceptance, adn still no letter in the mail yet!

Congrats everyone!!

2000 SATs, 3.906 (going down after semester due to senioritis) and top 10% (again, probably gonna drop out at semester). Solid resume and my personal statement was probably my best piece of writing so far in the app process.

I got the Presidential Scholarship and an invitation to the honors program. That's enough to convince me to go. I probably wouldn't have applied pre-Katrina. Hurricane Katrina and our government shameful response made a huge impact on my life and how I view the world. Tulane's role in rebuilding the city makes it an ideal fit for me.

I'm probably less of a partier than most Tulane students but I'm not really concerned about Tulane being too much of a party school. I'll be majoring in political science and minoring in either Spanish or Chinese.

The only other school I'd go to is William and Mary, where I havn't even applied yet. Even if I get in, it'll be a tough call.

Anyone else have Tulane as a top choice (first or second)?

Two very different environments - while the undergrad populations are about the same, Williamsburg's population of 12,000 is slightly more than the total enrollment at Tulane (though the grads are scattered around NOLA a bit). Are you a VA resident? Much easier to get in W&M than if you are OOS.

Both are, of course, excellent schools, and the best advice I can give is to visit (the cost of visits are but a small % of what you will spend over the next 4 years...) - with the scholarship, the cost to you will be about the same, so it is really a matter of what you want to major in (Tulane has an excellent political economy program (though I have to admit I don't know the subtle differences between it and poly sci) and, as for languages, I'm a big believer in learning those in-country), and what type of environment you want to live in.

well at least i got in somewhere...accepted here

2010 SATs 4.1 Weighted GPA 3.7 unweighted
