Accepted to Berkeley, UCLA, NYU with low GPA?

Has anyone gotten into Berkeley, UCLA, NYU with...

(Unweighted) 3.6-3.7 average freshman-junior year.

If so then what was it that made you stand out? Can someone shed some light on my situation? Thank you.

No I'm afraid no one with such an abysmal average has been accepted

The UCs are ridiculously competitive this year, they have an excessive of applications. Are you OOS? At this point, I'm not sure if that would help or hurt you (I heard something about UCs increasing the number of OOS students to boost their budget).

your GPA is good enough for NYU,but not competitive.(assuming you are taking challenging courses)

^Yup, I agree.

It's low, but it's not "too low." It depends a lot on your SATs.

wouldn't it also depend on what courses you've taken?

also, (even though im' not the OP) around what SAT score range would compensate for a somewhat low gpa?

That's good for NYU, not UCLA or Berkeley though unless your weighted is 3.9+(I think the avg GPAs at UCLA and UCB are both above 4.0)

I'm taking all the AP courses that are offered...and I am a California resident. Thanks for the feedback everyone :)

I would really like to know if I have a chance at Berkeley, NYU, UCLA, and Boston University? I want to focus on Economics and I believe I've shown my level of passion and commitment for the concept.

^ Boston U yes, NYU maybe (kind of a reach), UCLA and Berkeley are not as likely. I think you should raise your SAT scores and take SAT IIs.

Hi I am from Seattle Washington and was wondering if I had a chance of getting into NYU or UW. I have a 3.1 GPA. I have plenty of extras on my transcript including leadership, ASB vice president, diversity officer, sports and clubs. Another thing I have done which hopefully will look good on my transcript was running start my junior year and have 45 college credits which will hopefully help. I have signed up for SATs and ACTs in June but have not taken them yet. Please let me know if I have a chance of attending and what I should do to increase my chances of getting in or any other Universities I should consider.

Thanks a lot!

First of all, unless your parents can pay full freight to NYU ($55k per year), take it off your list. They won’t give you the aid you’d need to go there even if you’re accepted.

It’s hard to know your chances at UW without test scores. Your GPA is low for UW, but maybe a high SAT might compensate.

Well I was planning on taking out student loans I really want to go out of state the only in state college I prefer is UW. Also at NYU do you have to pick on of their undergrad programs are those the ones you are actually applying to? or can I just be a normal undergrad?

Microgirl: You need to calculate your UC GPA which weights AP courses and only takes Soph/Jr grades. A 3.7 unweighted GPA with lots of APs could indeed put you in the mix for Berkeley or UCLA.

Microgirl’s post is old.

Shaunson is the new poster.

Oh dear. You can’t take out that big of student loans. You’re limited to $5500 for Stafford loans per year and maybe a very small Perkins loan (about $2k). There’s a reason why students can’t borrow much - they can’t afford to pay them back.

If you want to go OOS, then you’ll need to consider other options other than NYU. You’ll need to consider schools that will be affordable thru either grants, scholarships, and small loans.

How much will your parents contribute?

My parents will pay all tuition for in state (Washington) I also really like University of San Diego. My parents also did the the GET program(guaranteed education tuition) which is for WA but I think you can use it for out of state places. Do you have any other suggestions for California colleges? I really do like University of Washington do you think it will help that my brother attends there and my cousin who received the National merits scholarship and and attends UW and she just got accepted into UW medicine which is extremely hard to do especially if attended undergrad there.

shaunson - What’s your intended major? Do you want a large university, a smaller liberal arts college or somewhere in between? Does your gpa take into account your college credits? If you did well in your college courses, you should have a pretty good weighted gpa. You may need to have your guidance counselor add them to your transcript.

I like big campuses i love the university of washington campus and i’m sure that considered a big campus i also like medium sized campuses it doesn’t really matter what type of college of liberal or whatever. I want to major in law so i’m probably looking into majoring in political science or history

Got accepted to NYU with a 3.7 and a 33 ACT.
