So, I was accepted for Fall 12 into the College of Letters and Science, but it said that I'll need to apply for my major (psychology) once I'm enrolled. Is this normal for psych majors at Berkeley, or is this some awful way of waitlisting me?

I plan to call admissions on Monday, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone else got this and what it might mean.

Berkeley does things a little different, where admission to the school doesn’t mean admission into the program you’re interested in. Once you’re finally over there, you apply for the psych major.

That’s where I’m concerned. Is it likely that I’ll burn my bridges at other UCs, fly up to Berkeley, and get denied from my major? Or can I assume I’ll be accepted?

Assuming you have the right prerequisites out of the way from your time spent at a community college (which is to say you actually look like someone applying to the right program), I would think most people get accepted to the major they’re interested in. I feel it would only be an issue for flippy-floppy people who keep switching majors but don’t have any groundwork.

I had a guide at UCSD when I took a tour there like three summers ago that had changed their major five times during the three years they had already been there. Berkeley’s system is most likely intended to prevent crap like that.

I will be attending a CC this Fall and hope to transfer to UC Berkeley in 2 years as a communications/media studies major. I understand it is very competitive and I was wondering if I could know what classes/grades you took these 2 years at a CC. If you followed the IGETC? What extra curriculars you did, etc… Also if Berk takes into high consideration your high school grades? Sorry for bombarding you with all these questions! If you could reply when you have time I would really appreciate it so much!

I am accepted by the College of Letter and Science too.
I actually want to major in political economy, but I did not apply PE in my transfer application. Is it possible for me to declare PE?
I have fulfilled the pre-req classes: ECON1 and STAT2.
However, for the recommended classes, I only took MATH 1A. Do I need to finish MATH 1B to declare as a PE major?
THANKS!

you have to follow IGETC, and ur major requirements (assist.org)
I dont think Berkeley look at your high school grades, since I didnt submit any of my highschool grades to them.

So if I have all the pre reqs completed for my major ill be fine correct? I am also a psych major. I’m not interested in anything else so I really don’t want to submit my SIR to cal and find out I won’t be majoring in psych

“applying” to your major is kinda like applying to go to a community college. It’s no big deal. When I went to calso, they just gave me a little paper-work to sign to declare myself as a philosophy major. Twas as simple as that. (if i remember correctly).

Psychology at Cal is a capped major, which means that there’s an application process to declare the major. Capped majors are usually ones that are very popular and receive too many petitions to declare, so they need to reduce the applicant pool.

It’s not Berkeley’s way of waitlisting you, it’s general procedure. Good luck!

If you have all the pre-reqs done for PE, then you should be fine as long as you can complete the major in four semesters. Recommended classes are just that: recommended. I would go to the major advisor and talk with them about whether or not to take Math 1B, but from what my friend says (she’s a PE major), it’s a fairly easy major to complete.

Psychology is a capped major, which means there’s a separate application process to declare the major. They will not accept everyone who applies (that’s what the application process is there for), but it’s not as if your chances are very slim, either. There is a chance that you will be rejected from the major though, if your application (grades, mostly) isn’t as competitive as the other applicants.

Your decision if you want to risk that or not.

Philosophy, on the other hand, is not a capped major. If you’re interested in declaring that, you should have no problem at all, provided you have all the pre-reqs done and are able to graduate in four semesters.

Thanks! I wonder did your friend whos majoring in PE complete Math1B ?
I actually wanna know more about PE since most of my friends are studying Econ instead ( i’m an asian).
For the orientation thing… are we able to regiester classes during orientation, or its just for us to know more about cal ?

As for your major, you were evaluated and given admission based upon the information on your application. You will need to seek advice from the major advisors in the department when you are here. It may or may not be possible, depending on how many other students are already in the department.

I AM SO CONFUSED.
SO I WONDER IS MY POSSIBILITY OF GETTING TO POLITICAL ECONOMY HIGH ???
DOES SHE JUST MEAN I HAVE TO COMPLETE MY PRE-REQ AND ABLE TO BE A PE MAJOR?
PLEASE HELPPP!!!
