I just received the incredibly disappointing news that I was accepted to the Division of General Studies at U of I, which was my alternative choice from the College of Business. So, what the heck happens now?

I know that I can apply to transfer in after a year in May, where it's extremely competitive and about 170 of 300 get in, but can I do anything now? Can I ask to be a review admit based on new information and 7th semester grades?

If not, can anyone speak to how difficult it is to really get in to CoB, and how hard it is to get a 3.5-4.0 your freshman year?

Getting a 3.5-4 gpa freshman year is possible but not easy. 1st semester my son got 3 A’s, 2 A-'s, and a B+. This was fabulous !! …however, it ended up being a GPA of 3.68 (Lab courses are two separate grades. Some of his classes were 4 credits, some were 3 credits and some were 1 credit—somehow it seems like the overall GPA should be higher but that is how it averaged out).

If rejected business now and given DGS there is little you can do to reverse the decision. They do not consider 7th semester grades in the admission decision or any appeal of it. For an appeal, you need something definitely fantastic that is new other than grades or you need to show that they had the wrong information when the decision was made (e.g., transcript submitted was wrong, official test scores were not yours).

The problem with transferring within UIUC to business is that with business you get one shot and one shot only – at end of freshman year into sophomore year. Business college makes decisions after your second semester freshman grades come out. Unlike other majors that continue to accept transfers through sophomore into junior year and which allow you to attempt a transfer more than once, you don’t get a second chance with business. Moreover, having a high GPA (even 4.0 after first year) is no guarantee of a transfer into business as the business college is truly one that bases its decisions on a full file review and ECs and essays are important. 359 freshman applied for transfer into business for Fall 2012 and less than half, 170, were accepted for transfer. Your chances in that group are better than if you are attempting transfer into business from another university or community college for which the business college acceptance rate for Fall 2012 was less than 13%, but I do not recommend your making a decision to attend on the assumption that you will be able to transfer.
