Accepted to HYPS but not in the top 10?

I heard that if you are from a public but not rank in the top 10 (people), it's very hard to get into HYPS.

Does anyone or know someone get accepted to HYPS but not rank that high, excluding URM, athletic, etc.?

nobody can tell you because there's no single formula!

Sadly I know no one.

And while there isnt a formula, getting good grades (and therefore a high rank) is a must. I havn't heard them going much lower than 6 in a class of 400

what the heck are you people talking about...

so long as you're in the top 3-5%, you're all set.

Well, apprantly someone got into Princeton but didn't make it into UT Austin. Odd, huh? It's been a crapshoot year...

I was only like 3/91 and I got in Stanford1!

my brother was like 15/450
at a so-so public high school in IL
he got into yale
so theres hope for you all!

Who cares. If you got in, you got in. Case closed. Be happy. :)

I was barely top 20 out of ~ 420 and I got into Brown.

I was barely in the top 20 out of 350-ish, if I recall correctly. I got into Stanford, though I did have other factors working for me.

i got into pomona and im not top 10%...no (significant) hook either

psst. P doesn't stand for Pomona

hehehe. ( 10 char)

you would think after 563 posts, i might know what HYPSM stands for ... if you were evn to look back about a week, i started a CC glossary thread..but that's beside the point.

Brown begins with B....if you look up a few posts

I think the idea of this thread is whether or not kids outside the top ten percent get into extremely selective schools, and if adding my two cents is going to be looked down upon, there truly is no purpose to this forum at all.

I just thought windslicers comment was funny, I wasn't looking down at your comment dude.

I have no idea what my rank is...I dunno if our school keeps rank data, but it never shows up on my transcript. What about you guys? How do you know your ranks?

My rank shows up on my transcript...

This is true, but I know a few people who've done it over the years

actually, quite the contrary at my school. Here, the top 10 are primarily the type who go home everyday and study study study with minimal to average ECs and community involvement. Most of them are going to Berkeley (since it is much more numbers based than HYPSM). The three who got into stanford for example, still had good gpas and were maybe 30/600. The difference was that those who got into stanford (and other HYPSM) were the ones who tried hard for their gpas but never felt it to be worth it to get 100% on tests instead of 91%. This left much more time for ECs albeit a slightly lower gpa.

It seems to me that Stanford takes more ppl who are not rank on the very top (i.e. top 10 ppl in the class). I knew a few who got into S but haven't heard anyone got into HYP without a top 10 rank!
