Hi all,
I was accepted to the BM program at MSM despite not sending in a recorded audition and not showing up for audition week…I got a teacher that I didn’t even request.
However, I did apply to and was accepted to the Barnard/MSM program. Will I have the same teacher there as well?
That’s very odd… have you called them?
If you were accepted to a competitive conservatory without an audition it sounds like a potential administrative or computer error. If you plan to attend, you should call them.
I’m not exactly planning on attending, but I will call anyway.
It could be that your name, etc, is very similar to someone else’s who DID apply and there is was a major error. Another person may be anxiously awaiting the acceptance that went to you!
I called yesterday, they just accepted me without an audition. No error on their part, and I have the same teacher for both programs.
That doesn’t make sense. Do you have a longstanding relationship with the teachers?
This has to be the most frustrating post I have seen…ever. I think of all the kids who auditioned and didn’t get in. Please be sure to decline asap as your spot may help someone get off the wait-list in that department.
Does this have to do with the fact that you are doing the Barnard/MSM program? Did that mean you could study at MSM without a prescreen or audition? Or do you have an international reputation?! MSM is very competitive…
@compmom I did send in a pre-screen, and sent the same tapes to Barnard/MSM
Was that pre-screening recording possibly considered instead as a recorded audition, and acceptance based on that? Looking through all the Barnard/MSM requirements, it appeared that you did need to audition.
@Clarimom Barnard/MSM was recorded audition only, so I’m guessing those tapes were considered for a recorded audition for MSM as well

Sounds like the mystery is solved.
OK, that makes a little more sense then.
If I were a student who had applied to MSM the regular way and was rejected I’d be a bit resentful reading this.
Yeah, it would be weird for a school like MSM or the like to do that, I can see them using a recorded thing like that as an audition tape, maybe they do that in some cases if the person didn’t audition or something. I haven’t heard of that happening before, but then again, that is the crazy world of music:)
Yes, it is very confusing. The website information states that it is a recorded audition, but only for lessons–not for a degree program. OP seems to only have applied to Barnard and the Barnard/MSM program, not to MSM. (http://www.msmnyc.edu/Instruction-Faculty/Programs/Special-Programs/Barnard) So she should not have received acceptance into a MSM degree program. Something is not right here.
