Accepted to MSM without attending auditions?

I see. OK, according to their website, MSM does accept recorded auditions–so it does appear that OP did apply to MSM the “regular” way, and has been accepted to the program. peoplelikegrapes, (Did you somehow apply for the MSM undergraduate degree in addition to the Barnard/MSM program? Was there both options on the application?)

I think you at this point do need to indicate to MSM that you do not intended to enroll in their BM program but instead your intent is to attend Barnard but take lessons through MSM through the cross-registration program.

Look it really doesn’t matter. You can do everything you are supposed to do, and they can pass on you in favor of someone who they just feel is a better fit. It’s like selling a used car, you can shine it up real good and put in a new air freshener, but they’re only going to buy it if they want it.

I haven’t posted before but I just read this entire thread and it seems disingenuous to me that the original poster says they are not “exactly planning on attending” and in addition is asking for an answer to a question that none of us is qualified to answer - whether the original poster will have the same teacher at both places. That seems to me to be a question only someone at the institutions can answer. So what was the point to this thread?

April fools?

Also, I don’t have specifics on the Barnard/MSM program, but for the Columbia Juilliard program you have one teacher, at Juilliard, for your music performance. There is no teacher at the academic school–that’s the whole point of the program. This part of the question doesn’t make sense, which is why I’ve wondered if the question is a fake (although I’m trying to be polite.) The OP does have other legit-seeming posts on CC, however. In any case, to suggest that MSM admits students who “did not even show up” for audition week is a serious charge, unless there were some clear arrangement for her to use a recorded audition. It seems like a post designed to stir up students who did apply to MSM. But I might be wrong–maybe this did happen and MSM’s admissions policies are less regular than one thinks.

The process of admissions is stressful for students and parents alike. I think the reason I commented - and chose this as the first thread I commented in - is because the brevity to the OP’s comments felt more like baiting than information seeking and I reacted to it - whereas if it weren’t decision process time, I might have just moved on. But reading for tone and intent in a thread can be difficult and I will also attempt restraint. And start posting in threads where I might be of some support/use.

I mean, this was a genuine question; the Barnard/MSM program was genuinely one of my top choices until this happened to me.

I called yesterday, and I got the same teacher for both programs, which sucks. So, now I’ve ruled out the program.

I’m sort of regretful that I didn’t attend live auditions now, as I didn’t get my top choice teacher choice for both programs now. Had I actually attended auditions, I feel like this wouldn’t have happened.

I read this thread too. …I can’t detect motive and while it was stranget…it did sound plausible.

I thought of adding a comment earlier but thought maybe it just fell in the category of talking about myself (my favorite subject btw). But my D did pre-screen for a school. Got invited to audition. Wrote back she couldn’t afford the trip and was told she could do a recorded audition. Wrote back to say thanks but time was tight. Was then told she could just re-submit her pre-screening as her final. So she just re-sent it and was accepted. So I didn’t find the “title” odd or baiting I guess. I know my D’s situation is different - she did have permission to submit the prescreen. Still it happened for her so I can’t think that it couldn’t happen elsewhere with a little less communication.

And…if that bums anyone out that she could get accepted without an audition…don’t worry she got rejections and spent WAY too much money at one particular school’s audition for nothing. Karma maybe?

In all fairness to the OP, I believe her initial question was really about the teacher–because she had received an acceptance from MSM but not with her first choice teacher, so she was wondering if that meant she was out of the running for that teacher’s studio in the combined program as well. According to the Barnard-MSM program application requirements, she had to apply to both schools. And, both Barnard and MSM websites indicate that a recorded audition was acceptable for her application.
