Accepted to Rice as Transfer

I got into Rice as a junior transfer. found out yesterday. while i am thrilled, it is not my top choice, and they want a deposit by may 11, before i will have heard from other schools. Is there any way to find out from other schools without losing my spot at rice? What would it be like going to rice halfway through college?
Thanks in advance

I'm sorry - I'm not a student, so I can't give you a student perspective - but the residential college system will include you and you will have a place to "hang your hat" and lots of bonding experiences to help you feel at home. Rice students are really welcoming, at least the ones we've come in contact with! I hope some current students will be able to answer your questions. and call Rice admissions if you want to delay your response to their offer.

Okay, I am a student, though not a transfer student. I agree with the above post that the colleges do a great job of incorporating new students - so though you'll be making a whole new social network halfway through college, it's a lot easier at Rice than at most schools.
I'm not entirely sure of how Rice is about transfer credit - I get the impression that it depends a lot on the department - I would imagine Engineering depts. are a little bit more uptight, most of the social science (with econ the exception) and humanities are a little less strict (and most of these majors don't have that many requirements, so you could almost do your entire major in 2 years if needed).

Congratulations :) I don't have any useful advice for you though. Sorry!

Have you tried writing telling them that you need more time to decide? I don't know if that will work, though. How soon after will you find out from the other schools?

I am finishing my first year in grad school at Rice. I have loved being in Houston and enjoy the closeness of the faculty and students. I went to Vandy for undergrad. I find that the Rice undergrads really get to know one another with the residential system. Choose Rice.

Hey, i talked to Rice, and it sounds like the deposit is nonbinding and its not that much money, so i think i am just gonna pay the deposit and then see what happens with the other schools. Brown is at the top of my list, but it looks like Rice might be where I am headed and I am curious to learn as much as I can about life there for a humanities student, as I know embarassingly little.

It's actually more the other way around. Science and engineering classes don't really change from school to school--they cover the same material and follow the same curricula--but social science and humanities don't always have equivalent classes at other universities.
