So i just received my deferral from Elon yesterday and I was a little bit surprised. I know Elon is an excellent school and is one of my top choices, but Tulane is indisputably a more competitive/selective/prestigious university.
I think I still have a fair shot at RD, but I guess it just further proves the inconsistency of college admissions.
Congrats to anyone who got in!
Elon is known for deferring top applicant who don’t show much interest. They were rather admit a lower stat person who is more likely to go than a top stat person who appears to be using it as a safety or a fall back.
That’s a twist for you @ntk131998. On the Tulane forum every year there are always a number of complaints from the Ivy type students about getting deferred from Tulane. @robert6080 I suggest you read this excellent piece by Tulane’s new Director for Admissions. Even though you got into Tulane, it applies to all students at all schools. http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2015/12/its-going-to-be-okay.html
@fallenchemist I agree that it’s a different way of doing things, I personally really like it. I was defered from USCarolina, but accepted to Elon with a scholarship. They are very holistic and often unpredictable in admissions.

If nothing else, manicurists are grateful because these admissions departments keep both parents and students biting their nails. I am not sure I’ll go quite that far with wig makers and pulling one’s hair out.
Similar story for my daughter. Deferred by Elon with stats which had previously gotten kids from her highly ranked HS in. She did visit campus and did express sincere interest. She was accepted into a couple other schools, which in previous years, were far more difficult to gain admission versus Elon. There was a marked increase in Elon applications from her HS (30+ this year vs only a half dozen 5 years ago) and that likely is part of the reason the bar has been raised. I think that Elon has done a great job in raising their profile and standard - good on them.
Hey everyone, thank you for your responses. I was in no way trying overshadow Elon, as i know it’s an excellent school and there was always a large probability of me not getting in. I was just a little surprised and frustrated at that time, as I DID show a large amount of demonstrated interest, and had I been accepted, Elon would be one of my top choices right now.
I’m still optimistic about the situation and really hope that I get in RD.
Good luck to everyone else applying!!
