Accepted to UCSB but denied at UCD, UCSD, Cal Poly SLO, and UCSC

So last week I went to the UCSB top applicant reception in San Jose that i was invited to. They told us we were the top 10 percent of the 63,000 undergraduate applicants and that we were all accepted. I was elated because UCSB was my top choice besides UCLA. I thought that I had a great shot at getting into Davis and SD also. Turns out that i got rejected to Davis, UCSD, Cal Poly SLO, and waitlisted to UCSC. My admission status for UCI hasnt changed yet and I am hearing the rejections come out in last week of March which we are getting nearer to. My stats are a little low 3.8 UC GPA and 1730 SAT but i thought with me being a top 10 percent applicant at UCSB i would get into a few of those schools. Its such a dramatic drop off me being a top 10 percent applicant out of 63k and then being waitlisted at UCSC (where my friend got in with a 3.4 gpa and 1600 SAT). Can anyone please explain this to me? I find it all a bit strange.

I went to the ucsb reception in San Jose too! I had a 1590 SAT and a 3.85 GPA. I guessed they looked closely at my GPA. lol My guess is that they simply didn’t have the room to accept all applicants with a high GPA. There are surprising acceptances/rejections every year. Congrats! :)

Wow great for you guys! No offense but I’m a little surprised they accepted you into the honors program with a 1590 SAT and a 3.85 GPA. Did you have any outstanding extracurriculars?

No worries buddy. You got in at UCSB your top choice and quite frankly, UCLA would have been a heck of a lot less enjoyable. Just thank your lucky stars that you got in and move on. There often is no rhyme or reason why you get accepted or rejected. Each school is looking for its own criteria. They chose you as much as you chose them. Congrats and enjoy the next four years. Complete the SIR and don’t look back or give it a second thought.

Seeing your stats, I don’t know whether I should feel worried or hopeful. I have a 3.5 UC GPA with a score of 27 on the ACT which is equivalent to a 1820 SAT. I have 400+ hours of volunteer/community service ie. Habitat for Humanity, 2 clubs at school, I work as a Courtesy Clerk at Safeway and worked as a poll worker 2 times for the federal elections. Applied for Economics with emphasis in Accounting. I honestly hope I can get in because I’ve been rejected by UCSD and UCD already and I’m still waiting to hear back for Irvine… Anyone want to give me a chance!? =(

Lol. I still don’t understand how I wasn’t in the top 10% of applicants with a 4.2 UC GPA and a 2320 SAT score.

@AnonymousA - They must have ranked applicants holistically because my friend, who has stats essentially acceptable for the Ivy Leagues, did not get an invitation while I did. A few other friends of mine who have stats pretty much exactly the same as mine, probably a little better, also didn’t get invites. They had to have chosen the top 10% holistically, otherwise it makes no sense.

Yea, thats weird. I have better stats than the guy with a 1590 and 3.85, and i never received anything from UCSB…

I got accepted by UC Davis, with a major in the biological sciences department.

Even so, I had solid ECs and good essays (I’d like to think). I was in the top 1.5% of applicants at UCLA so I guess UCSB does things a little bit differently but I’m not sure by which criteria.

@FitnessGuruBBer
Um…I’m a girl. lol

My weighted college GPA is 4.33 and my UW college GPA is 3.85. I’m not sure which GPA the UC’s use nor how they separately calculate my GPA. I’m pretty involved in my community and one of my essays was about working on a special project for my health academy. :)

@Curious

Notice the OP with a 3.8 UC GPA and 1730 SAT though, guess FitnessGuru just tried to infer that you also had a 3.85 UC GPA. Congrats on your admission to UCSB. Hope I get in tomorrow, ahh. May I ask what major you were accepted to?

@nuitari We both have nearly the same stats. Hopefully we both get in! I’m still waiting for UCI too. But if I get into UCSB, I’m going to be so freakin’ happy.

@nuitari
Pre- Biology. :slight_smile: Good luck! :D

@Lakersince95

Hopefully! Fingers crossed!!! Really want to get into UCSB, as I feel my stats aren’t terribly bad. Yes, it’s lower than most applicants, but I hope my decent amount of ECs can pull me through. I’ll SIR right away…

@CuriousJDG9513

Thanks! I’m gonna need it.

I got waitlisted at UCD and rejected from UCSD. I was surprised since I got invited to the reception as well. I have a 3.8W and a 35 ACT. Oh well. Hoping that Irvine loves me!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

I am guessing the reception invitees were based on the top 10% by each major. A 4.3 W gpa might be considered low for an engineering major, while a 3.9 w could be considered high for a global studies major. Just a guess.

After reading the BOARS 2012 Report on Comprehensive Review regarding UCSB, my understanding is this: GPA and test scores count for half, EC’s, essays, etc count for a quarter, and socio-economic criteria (low API school, first generation, low income status) count for the remaining quarter of the points. This report is very interesting as it gives you an idea as to how each UC reviews its applicants. Perhaps, reception attendees fulfilled full points for ALL three parts of review.

I got rejected from Cal Poly Slo and UCSD, but I got into UCSB, UCSC, CCP, SDSU, and La Verne ._. Waiting on SFSU, UCB, and Stanford.

i didnt think majors mattered just for acceptance, since ucsb says an applicant will be equally considered for their 2nd choice major (at least i remember reading this somewhere)

i got rejected by ucsb, ucd, but got into ucsc. kinda weird how the uc system works i guess.
