I got accepted into UCSC as a transfer student, however I failed one course (official drop deadline has passed a month ago), a literature class, according to assist, it's a requirement for me to take one literature course other than english composition, this would count as a requirement but I'm also taking Shakespeare which would fullfill that one requirement as well.

So my question is, will UCSC rescind my admissions because I failed this class? I can't find anything on the website about failing a transfer course.

I know I'm going to get people yapping about how I should have done better, I'm going through personal family problems at the moment, so I don't need that. I just want to know what must I do in order to prevent myself from getting rescinded.

Also some may suggest talking to my counselor and professor about late (documented) withdrawals, but I really don't want to share what's going through my life with them, well at least not in detail as it comes to a point I find it hard and embarassing to discuss. I also don't know how it's possible to document this circumstance in order for me to get a W in the course instead. I can honestly admit I don't care about the grade at this point, if I can still go to UCSC with an F in this course I'm ok with it.

But if there's no way to prevent rejection for Fall 2010, I'll probably start thinking about getting my family crisis resolved and forget about transferring for now (even though it may be my last chance). Also I don't need anyone feeling sorry for me if you think that's what I'm looking for, just the hard cold facts about transferring or any advice, thanks.

Back in 2007, I was admitted to UCLA as an English major, but got a D in my Math requirement course (Statistics). Sure enough, my admission was revoked. They were very strict about all my required courses being finished by the end of the Spring semester and wouldn’t allow me to take it again over the summer.

But that’s UCLA. I’m not sure about UCSC, though I do know they are one of the less competitive UCs. You might want to check their website for the specifics on what they require for transfer admissions (i.e. - if they are strict about all reqs being completed by end of Spring term), or you should just call and explain what happened and find out if they will maybe allow you to take it over the summer and maintain your admission. Even if it is embarrassing for you, it is probably the best way to handle it.

Hope this helps - C

In addition, I don’t think you can now get a W in the course since the deadline has passed for it, so it’s not really necessary for you to discuss it with your prof or counselor. The best you could do is, like I suggested, try taking the course again over the summer if UCSC will allow it & still maintain your admission for Fall. Even if you are/already did take a course to fulfill the req, an “F” on your transcript will clearly still affect your status.

Then again, if your family problems are really affecting you at this point, maybe it would be best for you mentally to postpone transfer. Take a bit longer to gather yourself, although keep in mind that most UCs now only accept applications for Fall terms, though I’m not 100% sure about UCSC. You might want to check to make sure & then decide what you want to do.

Best - C

Which English course are you talking about? The one required for IGETC/GE or the prereq for Literature (the LIT 1 course that is needed to declare the major)? The fact a Shakespeare course can count makes me think that it’s the latter you mean unless your school has some interesting agreements with UCSC.

If it’s an IGETC/GE course, then you are definitely risking your admission being rescinded. The only way to find out is to call UCSC and ask what the ramifications will be. If it’s the prereq for Lit (and nothing you needed to fulfill units or GE), then it’s a toss up. Again: call UCSC admissions and ask. You might get lucky and they’ll let it slide if you repeat it here. LIT 1 at UCSC is actually quite a fun class depending who you get for an instructor.

No one here can tell you an official answer on what will happen with your admission. You will have to call UCSC admissions and ask them yourself. Good luck.

@Kender the course I’m failing is actually a pre-req for another UC I applied to… but got rejected from.

I need one pre-req from a list of English Lit courses available at my CC for UCSC and Shakespeare already fulfills that. I took both American Lit 2 and Shakespeare because those two were pre-reqs for another UC, UCSC only needs one of the two. I’ve completed all my GE courses so that’s not a concern, also at UCSC we don’t declare our major immediately according to the site, even as a junior.

@Elli

Thanks, Elli, I’ll try talk to them about it, hopefully I might not even need the course or I could retake it over the summer, I’ll see.

@Kender actually I re-read your post, yes I’ve already fulfilled the Lit 1 requirement and on assist it says I need, “One additional course in literature” which would be Shakespeare OR American Lit. I took both as I said above I needed these for my other UC pre-reqs. But American Lit is the one I’m failing at the moment, I’ll try talk to UCSC about it, thanks though.

I’m in the same boat! My major is slightly more competitive. PSYCH

I received a ‘D’ in phil 13 (Which I recently discovered, wasn’t necessary for my tag!)
and an ‘NP’ in pre-cal (needed)
I’m short 4 units. Read my post, please? HELP?!

BumbleBee001- what have you done thus far? Have you contacted UCSC? They couldn’t give my any answers.

Thenisaid - I emailed UCSC, they said it’s very possible they can cancel my admissions, however they told me to write a letter to them with a reason as to why I failed any course before transferring, and to state whether or not I’m retaking the class over the summer (and to be sure I am enrolled in that class if I intend to retake it - which I have already done). I suggest you email them again or call, and tell them what steps they recommend or whether or not they will cancel your admissions. They didn’t say they will still accept if I retake it, but I hope they do. After I send the letter, I will know more about their decisions.

I posted my appeal letter. Its the crappy version, but you’'l get the gist.
I called and wasn’t given ANY direct answers. My friend, who also happens to be a lit major at ucsc, recommended that I talk to a counselor from my college. I’m affiliated with crown, yet offered rooming in porter?
I don’t know. I sent my letter on friday. I’ll probably know my acceptance situation by next week.

THEY’RE NOT ACCEPTING APPLICANTS FOR SPRING!
Good luck… see you in the fall? …maybe? :/

That’s too bad. =( Do you have any other options? I feel sorry about that one. What does an ‘NP’ grade mean?

thenisaid-what are you going to do? do you have any other options? did any other ucs accept you?

UCSB -hasn’t revoked me yet

Full ride to ucm.

looks like UCM is my only choice. I’m a local, and they told me I’m in so long as I pass my summer school classes. I’m grateful but disappointed. I should save my money for graduate school anyways.

I did recently receive a letter from the UC dept. stating that I turned in SIRs for multiple schools and that I need to fix it before july 6th. haha.

‘NP’ means No pass.

Pass/No pass doesn’t effect your gpa.

affect

What was the outcome for you, the OP?
