Accepted to UCSD but getting W's in multiple prerequisite courses

I took on WAY too many classes this semester and with some personal family issues that took place the last few months I am going to be forced to drop almost all of my classes. Fortunately I found multiple short term classes that start this week so I will still be IGTEC certified and still have all the TAG requirements fulfilled. I will just have 5 W's 4 of them being Prerequisites for my Psych major. I can still take a couple of these over the summer and plan to take the rest next fall while I am at UCSD as well (Can I do them at my CC still?). My question to all of you is how bad is it to have all of these W's, I have already been accepted so it shouldn't be a problem with UCSD right? But what about applying to grad schools as well, do they look at grades from CC's? How bad is this and what should my next step be? As long as I have all my TAG requirements should everything be okay?

No its not going to be ok. UCSD accepted you with the assumption that you will complete these classes with passing grades. Check your contract/terms of admission, I’m pretty sure getting 5 Ws is not part of their contract. If you break their contract they have the right to rescind you.

But still, my major could be changed anyway so why would it matter if I just did not complete some of my major classes but still am IGTEC certified. I will still have all of the requirements I need just through different classes. I can of course complete the rest of my major classes whenever. I must be wrong about this do you think it is a deal breaker and I have no chance now? What should I do?

Contact UCSD, like knightofwolf said and talk to them about it. Perhaps you can work out some plan where you take the classes over the summer, but people have been rescinded for situations like yours (do a search of the forums).

Thank you. Also I don’t know if I specified well enough, these are classes for my major. UCSD clearly states that these classes do not need to be completed before transfer. These are not classes that I need to fulfill my IGTEC class requirements.

I’m changing my major cause I dropped a major prereq. The tag helps you alot. They said I could drop my class and change my major with no problem. Definitely call them up to figure it out for your situation though.

Yep, we understand. The issue is that you reported these units as In Progress on your January Update (I assume you did, anyway), so they accepted you thinking that you would finish them. Also, while not explicitly stated on their site, it is generally accepted that the schools want you to finish all your major pre-reqs before transferring (some schools are stricter than others) because it gets you in and out of their school more quickly. For example, if you need four more classes for your major, that’s going to add another quarter of time you’ll be spending there.

Well like I said I would take the classes over the summer and while I am at UCSD, not staying at UCSD an extra quarter. I will tell them this as well of course. I just wanted to make sure that the main thing is TAG, and that as long as I fulfill the requirements I will be okay.

Dont freakout…and dont listen to anybody I had a similar situation and here is what they said:

Dear lbc123,

“Thank you for your email. W’s (withdraw) do not count against your GPA. Plus, making changes to your current schedule is okay provided you still meet the minimum requirements for transfer by end of spring term”

As long as you will have 60 units, a good gpa, and IGETC done by the end of spring you should be fine.

Every situation is different. But you should not assume they don’t care.
