I was just accepted for a winter Bioengineering transfer to UCSD, but I'm starting to freak out little because its looks like one of my "planned" classes is going to be wrong. The community college I had been attending had a scheduling conflict for the last two courses I needed from the Assist list (a math and a bio class), so I talked to a counselor who suggested I take two equivalent courses at the neighboring sister college. Everything seemed fine, so I signed up for each of the classes she had suggested and went on my merry way.

Well, it turns out one of them was not the correct class after all. Classes from within the series are interchangeable because they are within the same school district, but they are not in the same order, so while the Bio 1 series at my first CC does correspond to the Bio 6 series at the other, Bio1A apparently does not correspond to Bio6A. Once I figured out what was going on I talked to a counselor at the new CC who assured me that my math class was at least correct, but that there was nothing I could do about the bio class. After talking with the new counselor, it seems that half of what the first counselor said was just flat out wrong. From what she said, I'm not even sure my IGETC is going to valid anymore.

I just don't know what to do at this point. Am I totally hosed? Do I have any recourse? I've had my sights set on UCSD for a some time now, they have one of the best programs in the nation and I was really excited to get in. I've been working very hard for a long time to reach this point, and it would be very frustrating to have a minor oversight like this cost me my admission.

Youre talking about De Anza - Foothill arent you? haha
My advice is to call the UCSD counselors, who are much more informative. Since its not your fault, I’m sure its fine. Are you saying that instead of taking bio 6a, you took the equivalent of 6b, which totally messes everything up? IGETC says it only takes bio 6a, which i guess you didnt take. Just call UCSD and tell them what happened and I’m sure they will be fine about it.

Looks like you are screwed. If you are not going to be IGETC certified and there is a discrepancy in the information you reported on your application it is grounds for a rescind. Im pretty sure bioengineering is an impacted major and any failure to fullfill prerequisites will most likely result in rescinding of admission. Good luck, but I think your screwed.

Well there won’t be any discrepancy between the classes I reported on my application and my transcripts, just one of the planned classes. Basically everything I claimed that I had taken, I have taken. I really don’t know whats up with IGETC though, the first counselor said not to worry about it, that because I was an engineering major and had taken a bunch of general ed classes early on, I had everything I needed for IGETC covered and then some. The second counselor said I was missing two social science classes or something. At any rate, if this is something they are going to kick me out of the major, or the school over, I need to figure it out quick, because the dead line for fall applications to the UC system is getting close.

Is there anyone on the boards that can speak to the policies of UCSD admissions from some sort of official experience? Am I automatically out, or does it just mean that they have the option to rescind at their discretion? I would really like to know if there is some sort of authority I should appeal to before just giving up on my number one college choice and moving on.

hey there
this has nothing to do with your question but I was wondering if you dont mind saying what your GPA was to transfer to UCSD. I have a 3.75 right now and transferring fall 2010, and I RLY need to get in. thanks dud

Yeah, I think I’m just going to give the admissions people a call and see what they say.

Naylo: My GPA was about the same as yours, but I think what really tipped the scales was my personal statement, and the fact that I had almost everything on the list at assist.org finished.

hmm…is igetc required for bioengineering? i thought most engineering majors/colleges just tell their prospective students to disregard igetc…and just go for the couple of uc eng and math courses u need to admissions instead and all of the major prereqs…
