Accepted to UMN but not Carlson???

So the other day i was accepted to UMN… but to the College of Liberal Arts… When I went to visit the business ambassador said that most freshman are accepted right into Carlson School of Management. I’m kinda concerned because I’m not sure how that will work out if I actually go there if most freshman are admitted to Carlson. I looked all over their website and cant find any info about this… Someone please explain please!!!

hanna - this link should show the steps you need to take to in order to apply to Carlson for Soph year entry. They accept transfers from within , but you need to carefully read this link. Good grades in the 3 required courses will be critical and so will things like taking on a leadership role. Good luck!

I have two friends who are currently freshmen in CLA planning on transferring to Carlson because they didn’t get in originally. It’s doable to transfer, but not promised. The college you are in will barely affect the classes you take your first year, however. I believe the only difference is that in CLA, you will have to do an easy class called CLA First Year Experience.

Since Carlson is a four year business school, if I have to transfer, does that mean I have to attend the school for a year longer?

Look on the bright side and think of it as a way to save $850 your first year. CLA fees are $155/semester. Carlson is $580/semester.

The degree shouldn’t take any longer if you take courses that will sequence properly to lead to the degree you want and take classes that fulfill gen eds in a timely manner. I suppose if you are not in Carlson the 1st year, you won’t have a Carlson advisor so you may need to investigate this on your own. Guessing that unless you are in engineering, it isn’t critical the first year, but it’s worth looking at the courses you need and how often they are offered to put together some kind of program and see if there is anything you must take first year other than the 3 courses in that link of Kajon’s that you’ll need to apply into Carlson. That’s a good link. It also tells of courses you must NOT take prior to transfer, as they are to be taken together as an ‘immersion core’ in a single semester.

@buckets97‌ No, you will not. Unless you come into the university with multiple semester’s worth of credits, you will be taking the same introductory and lib. ed. courses that CSOM freshman can and will take. Then, if you get in to CSOM, your credits will all transfer.
