My son was accepted to UT Austin and just found out this morning. We are so excited for him! He will be our first child going to college and it's been more than 20 years since my husband and I have been in college ourselves. So now that we know for sure where he is going, we need to start planning for his move to Austin in the fall. I am looking for information on how to do the best we can with this transition to college life. What should I know/do/buy?

Thanks for advice and tips. I just want to learn as much as I can so we don't miss anything.

Congratulations! I’m not a parent but I’ve also been accepted and visited many times, it’s a great place My two cents are this: INVEST IN A BIKE! The campus is large and there are bikes everywhere and people everywhere! Bikes make it really easy to get around the sprawling campus and the roads are usually never filled with cars during class times, only bikes and people walking here and there.

Congratulations. Maybe I’ll share a class with your child.

For now, I believe the best preparation is orientation sign-up. It’s 2 1/2 days of meetings, adviser(s), and meeting future classmates. I’ve heard there is a family orientation for excited parents on the first day of student orientation.

Good luck on deciding what to pack when fall semester comes up!

As a current UT parent, encourage your son to sign up for the first orientation slot if he can. Classes fill up fast, and while UT does save class slots for later orientation sessions, by attending the earliest session possible, he will be able to change his schedule from home during other orientation registration times if he did not get the classes/times he wanted during his own orientation. In fact, some classes are full by the time later orientations roll around.
