Jadore, you received a PHONE CALL? All I received was snail mail. I guess I am not so high on the list!

Regarding the people who got accepted, did you apply for undecided engineer or a specific type and did you apply for the summer block or spring. I am asking if these selections have any affect to your chances of getting accepted.

That isn't rolling. Georgia Tech tells semi-finalist for the scholarship and a select few that are well above their expectations.

That Georgia Tech tells a "select few" indicates that it practices rolling admissions.

I received my acceptance on Thanksgiving last year, and I can assure you that my stats are not "well above" my school's expectations.

GT does not have rolling admissions. Rolling admissions is being able to apply and get accepted or denied all year long.

My d goes to GT and was accepted early Jan. Most kids did not get their answers until Feb.

Early acceptances are either legacy, President or fitting a need for the school.

What do you mean by fitting a need? I have no legacy and am an overrepresented minority... is that a good thing then?

Yeah, I'd like someone to explain these comments. My S was accepted today and is neither a legacy nor a minority. He did apply early in order to be eligible for President's. Are you saying he is probably a semi-finalist? I don't see how we could know that.

I suspect that a special need could mean super GPA and super SAT/ACT. But it could also mean qualified athelete or qualified URM. Tech has done really well at getting qualified URMs, but Tech works like heck to do it. I understand that legacy means almost nothing.

Just because they send out some acceptances ahead of time does not mean that they are rolling. Like they stated, the majority are held until late February.

I meant fitting a need in reference to needing a person that can play an instrument in the band or of course, a super SAT score or even a position on a team sport. As for the legacy, I am not sure that I agree about that not being important. Tech has been trying to more of a generation after generation following like the larger schools have. We have alumni in our family and they really wanted other family members. They even asked us what it would take to get our younger kids to go there (in the sense of what do they need to do to improve and what are the missing). I did not mean it negative when I said that early acceptances are probably for a need... I just meant that they may have reviewed certain apps that were very appealing and had something they were looking for and made the decision at that time. I am surprised that they did that in November but I have know others to get accepted in early Dec.

You guys are lucky cause the worry is over. Now you get to relax and get ready for the fall.

Under that definition, GT is not rolling admissions, I agree.

Compared to UGA, however, GT does its admissions differently. UGA applicants who apply early find out online on Dec. 15 whether they've been accepted, deferred, or rejected. GT applicants who apply by Oct. 31 do not receive notification at a specified time. A friend of mine, for example, received her packet three weeks before I did.

I disagree with your last statement, though. Like I wrote previously, I received my acceptance packet on Thanksgiving last year, and I am neither a legacy nor a Presidential Scholar. In addition, I don't play any instruments for my school, my SAT score was less than 2200, and I am not a recruited athlete.

Freshman Admission Guidelines

"...As soon as all required credentials are received - completed application and SAT or ACT scores - the applicant's file will be reviewed. If the applicant possesses above average credentials when compared with our most recent freshman class, an acceptance will be forwarded. All other applications will be held until the application deadline of January 15. At that point, final decisions will be determined and acceptances forwarded in middle to late March."

Would you mind telling us when you applied. I am curious to know if everyone that already has their acceptance applied at the deadline or if they sent in their apps early Oct? It would make more sense in figuring this out if they had accepted certain people based on when the apps were sent in. Otherwise, there seems to be no sense to this? Not to say that those that have already been accepted aren't qualified. I am just saying that there must be some reason some are notified earlier than others?

from Georgia Institute of Technology :: President's Scholarship Program :: Home
"Last year, students who applied by 10/22 learned that they were semifinalists on average more than two weeks before those who applied on 10/31. Even those who applied 2-8 days before the deadline found out about ten days earlier than those who waited until 10/31 to submit or mail their applications."

hey, thanks. I just read that and now I feel better. That makes more sense.
Even though I am sure that the ones that have already been accepted are great, I know that my s is too and was surprised that he had not been notified yet.
