Hey guys. I've been accepted as a Fall semester transfer, I'll be coming in as a sophomore (just about to complete my freshmen year).

Anyways, I know fraternities are pretty big at Vandy and I'm definitely interested in rushing.

I've done some research and it seems that most recruitment is Spring semester Freshmen year. However, It seems that I am allowed to rush and there is a program for transfer students wanting to rush. I found the info here - TRANSFER Students | Greek Life @ Vanderbilt University | Vanderbilt University.

I'm just wondering - is social life still pretty good (in terms of greek life) for a transfer student? Or is it very hard for a transfer student to be acclimated into greek life?

I’m also curious about this…

Greek life and social life are two different entities, although you’re hardly the first person to conflate them. Most transfers do not participate in Greek life, but it is certainly possible, especially since you know that you want to rush coming in and are already planning for it. It may be more difficult for you to get a bid from some fraternities, but if you fit in then you’ll be fine. The GLOs which have colonized most recently are generally the most accepting of transfer students - there are transfer guys in DTD, and quite a few transfer girls in ZTA.

Hey yo, I transfered back in the fall of 2011 and had a pretty big interest in greek life myself. For guys and girls its quite different. As a transfer male, you can pretty much “join” almost all of the houses. I think all but maybe 2-3 houses take fall pledges. Your pledge brothers will be sophomores (some juniors) and your class can be anywhere from like 2-15 guys depending on how many guys the house you are joining wants/needs. As a sophmore, you’ll have no problem joining a good house. You just have to make sure you are on your game the MINUTE you step on campus. Because a lot of guys who didn’t join their freshman year, already have a leg up on you, as most of them probably rushed second semester freshman year, and no a good amount of brothers. But that being said, I joined a fraternity with no problem, along with a lot of my male friends who had an interest in going greek. It’s also possible to join a house in the spring, but this is a little bit harder (as most houses will only take frosh in the spring). For girls its completely different. Only like 2-5 houses will take girls in the fall, depending on the year, and mostly its for quoate issues. Most of my female friends (although it kinda sucked at the time) were happy that they waited until the spring, as all the houses take girls. All the houses are also required (for females) to abide by a sophomore quota, so you won’t be at a disadvantage. Sometimes its actually easier for girls to get into a better house as a sophmore, than a freshman, because of said quote. But go greek, it was the best decision of my life (besides transfering to vanderbilt) and itll help you better integrate into the vandy community
