Accepted: UVA, UNC Chapel Hill, and U Michigan. Chances for Berkeley?

Hey everyone, so I was accepted to the U Michigan, virginia, and chapel hill, all out of state. I still have my heart set on Berkeley though so I was wondering how those colleges’ admission rates compare to that of UC Berkeley’s? I won’t go into all my stats, but background info-1440 SAT score, hispanic, lots of extracurricular including internship with large company directly under the CEO and winning states in tennis. Also, I’m from Florida so Id be oos for berkeley as well. Thank you!

I think Berkeley may be the most competitive of the 4, but because of the “randomness” of selective college admissions and the fact that you got accepted to all three of the other schools, your chances are probably pretty good.

Keep in mind UNC and UM only had 30-35,000 applications. Berkeley had over 70,000 plus.
Good Luck!

Joey, aren’t you on the wrong CC. Why would you expect readers on the Michigan CC to be able to judge your qualifications to attend UCB

“Keep in mind UNC and UM only had 30-35,000 applications. Berkeley had over 70,000 plus.
Good Luck!”

  1. Keep in mind the fact that Michigan had over 50,000 applications with transfer applicants;

  2. the in-state cohort absorbs 65% of the class, but only 20% of the class comprises in-state applicants; the implication is that you are competing with a pretty large out of state pool filling not so many out of state seats.

  3. at 40,000 out of state applicants but only 2,170 available seats, the matriculation rate is around 5.4%, which implies 13.6% acceptance rate at the going yield of 40% or so.

I think my numbers are right, but by all means check them.

Actually studywiki, Michigan received 50,000 applications from freshmen applicants alone last year. This year, the number could hit 55,000. Unlike Cal, which receives 80,000 applicants, most of Michigan’s applicants are OOS. Of the 50,000-55,000 applicants, 40,000-45,000 will be OOS applicants.

Blue85, Michigan’s yield rate for OOS students is closer to 25%. So if Michigan enrolls 2,000 OOS freshmen, it will admit 8,000. Out of 40,000-45,000 OOS applicants, that’s an acceptance rate of 18%-20%.

Joeywigley, I do not think Cal is appreciably more selective than Michigan, UNC or UVa, so your chances of admission should be roughly the same.

It depends on the major selected on your application.

Due to budget issues, the UCs have openly stated they will start admitting more OOS students. You have a good enough profile to at least apply if Berkeley is your dream school. You don’t have much to lose with the quality of you backup options.
