A ucla rep that visited my school told me i could write childcare for babysitting my younger sister and tutoring for helping her with her homework under the volunteer work section of the UC application.

I was just wondering if they would really accept it if i put that on my application or just laugh.

E-mail the college and ask. Some colleges would not consider that volunteer work just like doing chores at home is not considered community service.

That's volunteer work?! I'm not insulting you, I'm just surprise that anyone would consider that volunteer work. It's your family you're helping isn't it kind of expected?

do colleges find out each exact community service activity that you did? So does my school send them all of my comm. service logs? there are like a million i turned in (well not literally).

I wonder if the UCLA rep comprehended that you were talking about tutoring your sister. I've seen admissions reps who were so tired and distracted that they weren't paying attention well.

Most colleges would not consider tutoring and transporting your sister to be volunteer work. That would simply be considered being part of a family. In fact, I think that most college admissions officers would look askance at anyone who put something like that under volunteer hours. What's next? Including dish washing at home as community service?

If you are doing major things for a sibling like being totally in charge while your single parent works all weekend or works every evening, that's very different. It still wouldn't count as community service, but it would count as your handling an important responsibility. You'd virtually be raising your sib, and that would be impressive to colleges.
