So I received my acceptance for UT Austin today! It was posted online, after applying on December 1st (and having my transcript appear online Monday, only two days ago). I'm from out of state.

Does anyone know how the Turing Scholars admissions process works? I'm curious to find out when I'll hear from them, considering how quickly I heard back from the university itself.

And on an unrelated note, does the university offer merit-based scholarships? Is it too late to apply to such scholarships? I noticed in the scholarship application that I had to demonstrate financial need, and I frankly don't have any need, so I decided not to submit that application.

^They’re probably still processing your stuff. They got a LOT of stuff the last week.
^^I applied pretty early, and got my acceptance in like <24 hrs (almost 12 hrs! I was really impressed). But I don’t think that has anything to do with when Turing notifies.

I also got in really fast – like less than 24 hours. Meanwhile some of my friends who are top 8% still have not even got in yet… In fact, most people I know who have applied have not heard back yet.

I got in like Nov 27 or something, but I still have not heard back yet from Turing. One kid in my school who will probably go to MIT or CMU got accepted already, but he said his dad kind of pulled some strings to get his application to the top of the list so…

I e-mailed the Turing advisers and they said they would be 100% done by March 1 (aka Feb 28), so we should know in the next couple of weeks.

Good luck! I hope to see you guys there next year

roneil: Just curious, did you get the Turing, and by when ? My son is also
OOS and in the same situation as you described, a year later. Thanks.

Thanks. He did get accepted to UT around mid Dec, and yesterday two
envelopes showed up, which I had hoped would be regarding his Turing
application. But they were both basically paper versions of his on-line
UT acceptance. Going by your experience, it really could take till end Jan
to hear back, since he only applied 12/1.

I applied to UT a little before 12/1 but I haven’t heard from them. (I am also an Out of state student.) how likely is it to get in? What did you get on your SAT or ACT?

Son (OOS, CA) received his acceptance to the Turing program yesterday. He is
really happy, and feels very fortunate to be accepted into such a prestigious
program.

Has anyone been to the various honor meetings UT holds in March or thereabouts ?
The CS department is having one in early March, and I was wondering what gets
covered, and what people’s opinions were, since it is non-trivial to visit from
where we are.

^ Hi, dnarayen, each honors program runs their own admitted students events, so it sounds like what you really want is the scoop on Turing Scholars, right?

I hope someone can give personal feedback from past attendance, but regardless, I suggest you call the Turing staff to find out what they will offer so you can decide whether you think it is worth the time and cost to travel. One of mine participated in the CNS Dean’s Scholars event last year and came away very impressed and well-informed–it was a full day showcase and included a one-on-one consult with a professor for a personalized discussion of how being a part of the program might play out vis-a-vis the student’s goals. If your senior is trying to compare/contrast with other colleges to make a final decision come May 1, I’d rate this as near essential unless he/she has already spent time on campus with Turing folks, perhaps in a pre-app visit.

Note, if this is something they are doing ancillary to the annual Explore UT day some Saturday in March (Google the event–there is a website), then you really do need to talk with Turing to find out exactly what they will be offering. That is a day primarily designed for K-12 families and HS juniors to get a taste of UT. It is a fun madhouse! Before I invested the time and expense to travel, I’d want to know exactly what programming is planned for admitted Turing Scholars.

So basically…I could’ve said it in one sentence…I think you should call Turing to find out!

TXArtemis : No problem, appreciate the detailed reply, and I will call
and find out what they have planned. My HS senior has never been to
Austin, the impetus behind his application is really me, since I am an alum
and have been strongly recommending UT to him every chance I get.
