I was recently accepted into nyu, colby college, and barnard college (and waitlisted at tufts, wesleyan, vassar, and macalester). I'm leaning towards barnard right now, but is that the best choice of the ones I got into?

That depends. What do you plan on majoring in/what are your plans concerning grad school?

i'm leaning towards a major in anthropology with a focus on linguistics. i know that barnard doesn't offer linguistics as a major or minor, but they do have a number of courses in it. as far as grad school goes, geez, that seems far away...haven't thought it about it too much yet to be honest, except that i plan on going. that sounds stupid, but it is 4 years off.

did you get a scholarship at any of them? all are great schools

i got 21,000 from colby, 17,000 from nyu, and 20,000 from barnard (after i had them increase it because they originally offered me 9,500). those are all what they gave in grants, by the way.

those are all pretty comparable i would say.

barnard I'd say

I don't know where all the colleges are, but I've lived in NY a good portion of my life and I gotta say -- If you want to hae fun and stuff, go to NYU. It's a good school, plus you're in one of the biggest cities in the world, so you can never say you're bored. And if u want to chill and get away from the city, you can always go to Queens (the good part; not the part where 50 Cent came from ;)

barnard is in NYC too, Scar, it's just in Morningside Heights instead of in the village.

go to NYU (10 characters)

Based on your other applications, I don't think NYU is right for. I would go to Barnard. It has much more of a campus/community feel than NYU and you got better fin. aid. I think Colby's size and location would feel constricting after a couple of years.

In that case, go to the one that has the better programs for your major, then if you still can't choose, go to the one thats cheaper, and if you still cant choose go to NYU cauz it sounds better.

if you want a city:
NYU is waaay too big; that's why I said barnard (it's a small school with all the business of the city)...and it seems like, from your choices, you're more into liberal arts colleges.....it's pretty difficult to find your place at NYU; one of my friends who is a freshman there just transferred out

if you want to get away from it all:
colby

i liked colby a lot. it's just that i feel like my opportunities in waterville would be limited, maybe.

scar, why does nyu sound better? do you mean that it's more well-known?

NYU its better

barnard actually does have a linguistics major now. it's not listed because it's sort of a complicated situation (columbia used to have one of the best departments in the world, but then it disintegrated for various reasons, and now there are a couple new professors who are getting it back on track), and i think you declare it as a self-designed major, but they do have a track for you to follow, enough courses for you to complete a major, and professors you can write your thesis under.
and barnard's anthro department is stellar. i mean, president shapiro was an anthropologist before she was president, margaret mead went here.. basically barnard has a tradition of excellence in every subject :)

nyu does sort of stick out from your other schools which were all liberal arts. nyu is huge.. i think you should evaluate exactly why you decided to apply there, and figure out if there's something you can get from nyu that you can't from barnard. nyu probably is a more recognizable name, just because its location is in its name, but barnard is more prestigious (although i dont think that should matter in your decision, they're more or less the same tier anyway even though i am positive you will get a better education here at barnard). if you have any questions about barnard feel free to ask.. it is an amazing place.

people do love to make sweeping generalizations on this forum

if you don't think the colby campus/location is for you, go for barnard. it's a really amazing liberal arts college, and if you're worried about it being singlesex, you're in a huuuuge city! there's plenty of guys! plus, if you go to barnard, you can take classes at columbia cause they're affiliated!!! an ivy league!!! and if you like it enough, you can even transfer! its about a billion times harder to transfer to an ivy from most other colleges....NYU is sooooooo huge and doesn't even focus on undergrad like barnard....nyu is horrible for that I think

thank you. you both made great points. and thanks for the info about the linguistics major! that's fabulous.
