MSMDAD like justlookingnow I’m a MU alumnus and have a S who is a senior in the college of engineering. Marquette is located near downtown Milwaukee. Being an urban campus there will always be issues with certain areas. During orientation students will be notified the areas of the city/surrounding areas students should avoid. Did visit with my S four years ago and surrounding areas look a lot safer than when I graduated in ’83. Overall Milwaukee is a pretty safe city, but like with any city late at night you are safer walking in groups. MU also offers their students a limo service in case they do not feel safe walking to campus. Overall my S has enjoyed school and the city and has never felt unsafe. These links might help with your questions and include a virtual tour.

I think the neighborhood is fine. I wouldn’t define it as swanky or upscale, but I wouldn’t categorize it as unsafe either! The neighborhood just outside of the campus is made up of a few businesses & restaurants but is mostly houses, rowhouses, and apartments. This area (just north and west off campus) is where most upperclassmen choose to live. I do recall that if one went further north or west than this area, then the neighborhoods got a little more dicey. However, there really is no reason a student would need to be that far off campus anyway. Traveling east from the campus, is downtown Milwaukee and all that has to offer. To the south there’s really nothing that I can remember except I94 (expressway) and there may be some fields down that way.

I would agree with newsdrms that the area surrounding campus seemed nicer and safer to me today than when I was a student there. It also seemed safer than many of the other colleges we saw recently (Fordham, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Loyola Chicago to name a few if you are familiar with any of those). That being said, Marquette IS urban, and the campus isn’t walled off or anything from Milwaukee, so one needs to use common sense. Don’t leave your iphone on the table at the library while you run to the bathroom, don’t walk home alone late at night, etc, that sort of thing.

Campus safety does patrol the campus and surrounding area. The Milwaukee Police also patrols the area. In addition to the “LIMO” shuttle service, Campus safety also has a courtesy walking escort service where a pair of people will walk you home. These two programs run daily from something like 5pm to midnight (for the walks) and to 3 or 4 am (LIMO). They extend to the nearby off campus area as well.

newsdrms and justlookingnow thank you for your thorough responses. My second question is related to the alumni network ( I realize that both of you are alums). How extensive is the alumni network outside of WI and IL? I am asking because when it comes time for internships, the alumni network/connection is really important. Also, what about reputation? Let’s say that you live on either coast, would people recognize the name “Marquette”? I have to confess that until this round of (this is my second of three rounds) college applications, I had heard very little about Marquette.

Marquette does draw students from all 50 states and internationally. Most do come from the midwest (Chicago area in particular & Wisconsin), so I think it’s safe to say that’s where most of the alums are. However, there are 40 or so different alumni chapters located throughout the country, including ones in the major metropolitan areas on either coast.

I do think many people outside the midwest recognize the name Marquette. FWIW, USN&WR does categorize it as a National University (currently ranked 83rd) as opposed to regional. I will say though that when talking to someone here and the subject comes up, there is always look of familiarity on their face, but admittedly it is often followed by a “where is that again?” The name recognition may of course have something to do with that they’ve been playing in the Div I Big East Conference for a while now (at least through the rest of this season), but I don’t really know. In any case, I do think Marquette is highly respected.

Scholarship letter came in the mail today and D received Ignatius Scholarship of 12K per year.

@marybee333, Congratulations! DD also received the Ignatius Scholarship of 10K per year.

Son received Ignatius Scholarship letter over the weekend. 14k per year. We are very excited for him.

@jdxxjmd Do you mind if I ask what your son’s scores and GPA were, and what the rest of his resume looked like? I ask because 14k is the highest amount I have seen given out so far.

I received the 12k a year with an ACT of 34 and a 4.04 GPA (out of 4.5) coming out of a strong Jesuit high school.

D received the Ignatius Leadership Scholarship of $8,000 per year and the Magis of $2,800 per year. So happy for her. Loved Marquette when we visited. Into 6 schools waiting on 2 more. We will go back and visit again.
