For all of you that got accepted, what does it say when you check on Univ. Of Delawares website? Does it say congratulations, or does it give just general info as to what was received. Just curious. Thanks!

My son received the second chance for the Honors program letter today. I'll encourage him to do it, although he's pretty sick of writing essays now as he's been doing quite a few scholarship applications! But Delaware has recently moved up a bit on his list, so getting some extra perks for being in Honors would be nice if he goes there.

for anyone going to the scholarship competition, when are you arriving/leaving? I'm debating on whether to stay over thursday and go to a class friday morning or not.

I think that I am going to stay at UDel on Thursday, and then go to a class on Friday.

I still didn't receive anything from delaware about the scholars competition...do you think I should call them? I already called to check my app was complete, and it was, and they told me decisions are mailed mid-March. I don't want to sound arrogant to them or anything, so it would have to be really carefully worded, but I think I'm qualified and it would be horrible if I lose a scholarship because it got lost in the mail. What do you think?
Also, is the duPont scholarship included in the distinguished scholars thing?

Yes, I think I remember reading that the duPont scholarship is one of the scholarships included. Not to be rude, but why do you think that you are qualified?

Well I have a 1510 SAT, which is up there for delaware, but I know it's not just scores. I also have a 4.0 gpa and I'm like 2nd in my class, all my stats are in a previous post on this thread. I also scored 5s on all 3 APs I took, and I'm taking 6 APs this year. I have really really good recs, and the essays were pretty good. I also have tons of music ecs (with leadership) plus regular ones, and some good community service stuff I was active in.
Anyway, I called them and they said I didn't get it, so....I'm confused as to why, but oh well nothing I can do. Congrats to you guys!

maca11_

What do you mean you didn't get in? They told you over the telephone you were rejected? I can hardly believe that with your stats...

No I wasn't rejected from the college (guess I won't be finding out till mid March), I'm just not selected to compete for the scholarship, which means I'm not a top applicant.

Maca - did you apply by the deadline for scholarship consideration?

Yeah it was definately in by dec 15. I never knew udel attracted such top applicants!

Just to be clear, cause I don't think I mentioned it - the only, emphasizing only, reason I was kind of expecting to at least be invited was because my sister was 4 yrs ago, and I have better grades than her. Otherwise I wouldn't have known about it.
--They do have other merit scholarships though, which you don't need to go down for, so I'm gonna hold onto that thought for now. The people that don't win the distinguished scholar awards are also considered for these.

BTW, my sister told me a little about the competition if you guys have any questions (it might've changed in 4 years though).

I applied to UDel by December 15th-- it's without a doubt my top choice. I'm not sure how selective the scholarship competition is but I believed my stats were good enough to qualify me. I have a 1510 on the SAT (710V, 800M), 790-Chem, 710-Writing, 770-Math IC and a 4.0 unweighted GPA, a 100.1 "weighted" GPA, and many honors, APs and extra-curriculars. I am in the top 1.8% of my class. I have not received an invitation to the competition-- is it likely I will receive merit scholarship money despite this?

I second(or third) the question: Are there other merit scholarships which DON'T require the competition program?

I'm almost positive there are other more general merit scholarships. When I had called, they said not being invited doesn't exclude you from getting other scholarships. The other scholarships wouldn't be as big as the ones from winning the competition though.

ali87 - Your scores are way above the average for UDel and you seem to have everything else needed, I'd be shocked if they didn't give you anything. Delaware is also one of my top choices!

that's really weird. i have similar stats, only slightly higher SATs, and i got invited. maca, what is the competition like? i'm really nervous about it.

I would also like to know a little bit more about the competition.

Keep in mind that what I know about the competition is from 4 years ago, so things might have changed.

According to my sister, who was competing for duPont, the weekend was stressful but fun. They arranged lots of good events for you guys, like dinners etc. They hand out an itinerary at the beginning. If my memory is right, they put everyone up at Embassy Suites, which is right near the campus (and really nice). But there was also an interview, and some questions threw her - maybe look in the newspaper to be aware of current events before you go. There were also the regular interview questions (eg what are your interests, etc). They also had to write an essay while there, under timed conditions - they give the topic, that year I think it was something to do with the human genome project. She said the most stressful part was when they put everyone in groups and threw out a topic, and watched how you would participate in a group setting - probably looking for who would provide intellectual answers and who are leaders. That's all I really know, good luck!

Great. Now I am scared.

ahhhh. thanks for the info. but yeah, now i'm even more nervous. but at least this is how everyone will feel i think. we'll all be in the same situation.

Someone from Delaware called me today to say I got in. I wasn't home, so he (or she?) spoke to my mom, who didn't ask if I got into honors or not, so I won't know 'til I get the package, which the man said was on the way. :)
