Yay :D

did you guys apply RD or EA/ED (whichever one it is they do)? PLEASE say the latter. I haven't received anything yet!

My S applied early enough (pre Jan 15) to be considered for "honors admissions" but never heard until yesterday. I know his GF did also and did hear early, and even was there last weekend for an accepted student program. I also have a friend who's D had applied early and she was also still waiting. As of last Thursday my S's midyear grades were not "logged in" according to the person I spoke to on the phone, but they readily admitted they may be there, just not logged in. I had the school fax them another copy. The other issue I learned regarding S's admission back a month ago was there was another student with same name applying. Back then they thought he was missing a form, but it was there, looked at the wrong file. We dealt with that for two years in HS so I knew there could be mix ups (in HS interims were mailed to wrong families, not a happy time). So, what caused the delay, who knows. I think it could have been his gpa. His SAT's were 1490, but GPA around 3.45 so there's a descrancy they may have wondered about too. If you haven't heard, you may want to check to make sure they really have everything. They're a state school and the impression I've gotten are overwhelmed with the paperwork. Good luck!

Just got my acceptance letter yesterday!

Stats: (Just because everyone else is doing it these days...yes, it's the in thing.)

GPA: 3.65 W. (I had a really bad junior year due to a cross-country move, among other things I'd rather not get into, which I explained in my application. Everything else though is top-notch.)

SAT: 1250 (I really wish I did better on the verbal. ...Um, and the math. Lol. I owe it to not studying enough and not getting enough sleep.)

SAT II:

Math IIC- 570 (ick)
Writing- 640 (still ick, considering that I regard myself as an accomplished writer. ...Okay, not accomplished. That would mean that I'm publishing novels. I'm getting there though.)
U.S. History- 730 (Ahh, there we go.)

EC/Awards: A little here, a little there, but uh...let's not go into the specifics, m'kay?

APs: 6
Honors: 6

The Essay: Honestly, I have no idea how they viewed my essay. To some it could be interpreted as weird and desperate, and to others it might be seen as brilliant and profound. Who knows? I didn't want to show it to anyone, lol.

Well, despite some of my comments sounding a tad meek and embarrassed, (remember, I'm in a forum full of top 1%ers lurking at every corner/thread), I'm still happy about the letter...as indicated by this smiley face: :D

Plus, in an attempt get away from the subject of me, congratulations to all of you! Chances are that I'll be going to Mary Washington (there's me again...I just keep on coming back), so I'll be sure to try to talk to you people more often in the coming months.

By the way, does anyone know how roommate selection works at MW? I visited the place last summer, but I don't recall anything about that subject.
Thanks!

In response to Halfwayinthebox:

I applied under RD, around the beginning of January. I do hope you get accepted!

Wow, you've already received your acceptance letter? Seems a little early to me, but I'm not complaing...that is as long as I get in! I applied in early January as well, so I should be hearing from them soon. Actually, I take that back: I live overseas, so mail takes SO long to get here. I probably won't hear from them for another week or so...eh.
Do you or anyone know if UMW has a trend of sending out acceptances first and then rejections, or do they generally send out all decisions around the same time? They are small enough of a school to do it that way. Anyway, congrats on your acceptance! Plan on attending the school?

Correction: I applied in mid-Januaray, right after UMW's deadline for EA/D applications, not early January. Since you claim to have applied early in the month, I suspect your application was actually submitted in time for EA/D consideration (hence the early acceptance letter). Please correct me if you're certain I'm wrong. :)

Well, as far as I know, I signed up under RD. My guess is that it's the overseas deal that's making the the letter take a little while longer reach you. I'm 99.9% sure that all of the acceptance and rejection letters for each "block" (ED, HD, RD) go out at the same time. In fact, I'm not sure if many (if any) colleges send them out at different times. It sounds like a cruel method! (People could find out their decision more easily as well.) However, with MW, don't sweat it. I'm confident that everything will turn out just fine for you.

Edit: Thanks for the congrats, btw! I appreciate it. As for whether I'll be attending the school or not, at this point in time, it seems like a 75% chance. I haven't received letters from W&M and UVA yet, but I highly doubt I'll be getting into either of them. I also haven't received letters from Carnegie Mellon or JMU, both of which I think I'll get into (I applied to the Humanities and Sciences program for CMU.) However, Carnegie Mellon is just too expensive, and JMU...well, I'm not quite sure about JMU yet, as I haven't visited it yet. Since I got into MW, I think I'll definitely be getting into JMU as well, but between JMU and MW just based on stats, I think I'd rather go to to MW.

Accepted (honors admission)...3.7 GPA, 1420 SAT.

I went to the Preview program two weekends ago, and I loved it, but I'm not 100% positive yet.

From what I've read on the main College Admissions Discussion Board, it seems like some of the UCs generally mail acceptances first and rejections later. I don't think there's a seperate official date for rejection letters or anything like that, but that it's just more of a trend of the UCs applicants have noticed over the past years...

anyway, you're probably right. I most likely haven't received my acceptance/rejection letter from UMW yet only because I live overseas.
also, I wouldn't completely dismiss JMU just because of its stats. I know a lot of people, including myself, that would consider JMU to be just as good of a school as UMW. the only reason i'd take UMW over JMU is because of it's small size. Just my opinion though...

Thank god! I was freakin' ACCEPTED to freakin' UMW!!
WOO HOO!

Male
1270 SAT
3.03
(there are several posts out there that contain a more detailed listing of my stats, if you're interested. maybe i'll post the entirety them again later.)

Wow, you guys cannot possibly imagine how ecstatic I am! After having received the discouraging (though unsurprising) news from VaTech, for some reason, I thought my chances at my other reaches (this school and JMU) were close to zero. Maybe UMW was never a reach for me because I was a male applicant. I know that the school had a low number of males, but could being male have had THAT much of an effect on their decision? Because, seriously, look at that ugly GPA...
Anyway, I will probably end up attending UMW, since I'm guessing JMU, like VaTech, will reject me, and I now have no desire to attend VCU. I actually have a few questions regarding the acceptance, which I will ask in another post later. For now, I just need to take a break, relax, and enjoy this unbelievable moment. Congrats to anyone else accepted!

congrats!!!!! YAY :D

Thanks, hhboyji. One day after having received my acceptance letter, and I'm still the most happy I've ever been. Could receiving an acceptance letter from one of your reaches possibly be the best feeling in the world? Anyway...

Here's a more detailed listing of my stats, as I promised:

Male, Asian/White
Sat: 1270 (630V, 640M), SAT II Writing: 630
Cumilitive, Weighted GPA: 3.03
Current Senior GPA: 4.1
First three years attended competitive, international school;
now attend a DoDDs school (probably equivalent to a very average public)
took AP Stats (3), currently taking AP Gov't
Weak ECs (band), a very strong recommendation f/ old counselor, decent essays

Now for my questions:

If I was to do a poor job on the AP Government Exam (a score of 1 or 2), would this be enough for a school like the UMW to withdraw my acceptance? I know that at more competitive schools, this would likely happen, but how about at UMW? I'm not concerned about mainting my GPA; it's only the AP Exam that concerns me.

Okay, I thought I had more questions in mind, but I guess this is it...for now. Thanks!

Congratulations, halfwayinthebox!!! :D

<<if i="" was="" to="" do="" a="" poor="" job="" on="" the="" ap="" government="" exam="" (a="" score="" of="" 1="" or="" 2),="" would="" this="" be="" enough="" for="" school="" like="" umw="" withdraw="" my="" acceptance?="" know="" that="" at="" more="" competitive="" schools,="" likely="" happen,="" but="" how="" about="" umw?="" i'm="" not="" concerned="" mainting="" gpa;="" it's="" only="" concerns="" me.="">></if>

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. Since MW accepts scores of 3 or higher on AP exams, I'd say that getting a 1 or a 2 won't do anything bad at all. JMU, has a more specific AP credit chart (that actually has tons of 3s as well), but I don't think they'd penalize you either for not doing well on the exam. Plus, since it seems that you're going to do well on the exam anyway, you just might get credit (with a 4.1 gpa for the semester, I would say you've got a good grip on the material.)

Lastly, it is important that you watch your GPA, but the only thing I think could hurt you would be an "F" (yet...one of my friends told me today that her brother failed calculus last year and still got in to MW.) Once again, congrats and hope you do well on the AP exam next month! Keep me posted.

Thanks, Idcubed.

I definitely know that I shouldn't let my GPA slip too much. What I actually was trying to say was that I'm not worried about my GPA dropping. The classes I'm taking this year are fairly easy. At most, I could see my GPA dropping down to a B+/3.5 for the second semester. Sorry for not being very clear on that...

when do you hear from UVA amd C W&M? You might think it's unlikely you'll get into either of the schools, but stay positive, because ultimately, you never ever know! Good luck!

i still havent heard from UMW…i really want to get accepted but I still haven’t heard from them…when were rejection letters sent out from UMW?
when were you accepted?..and if you were did u have a total SAT score of 1200 (including writting) is that too low to get accepted? i have a senior GPA of a 3.2
i live in argentina…and am half american…

Wow, well over two years since I’ve looked at CC and suddenly I’m getting an email of activity on one of my old strands. DS who prompted me to be the “parent from h@#$” (or maybe helipcopter parent) is now graduating from UMW four years after all this started.

As for the response to the request that prompted this, don’t know the latest on admissions but I’ve been reading it’s not easy or pretty this year. A 1200, including writing, sounds way, way too low for consideration, although I’m not an admin person, just an empty nest parent now days (hoping that DS will get a job and not come home permanently to the next again!).

Good luck.
