Accepted!!!

^^^Congrats to your D, 2Leashes!

One of the “tricks” students from distant places use is to pre-order most of the dorm items from their local BedBath & Beyond and then pick them up at the BB&B in Bloomington.

Accepted as well!

Here are my stats in case anyone is trying to determine where they fall:

GPA: 3.94W / 3.79UW
SAT: 1400
EC’S: Quite a few leadership positions which I am assuming helped…

I was pretty excited considering this is the first college I have been accepted to. I was awarded the IU Distinction Scholarship, offered a chance to apply for the Selective Scholarships, and invited to join the Hutton Honors College. I received both the acceptance package and Hutton Honors College invitation package the same day in the mail (two different mailings).

The SSA looks somewhat arduous, especially considering the size of the scholarships as well as the short time frame we are given to complete it. Still I’m pretty stoked to be accepted into the Honors College as well as IU. Best of luck to all the other applicants!

Oh, you’re right! I remember my neighbor’s daughter doing that when she went back to school in Florida this year. I notice they also have a Target and other discount chain stores. Thanks!

Congratulations, College182!

I’m curious, did you get the notice about your IU Scholarship and invitation to HHC/Selective Scholarship in the snail mail? I know you said they were in two different mailings. So far, my daughter just has her email acceptance letter. No mention of the scholarships or HHC yet.

Do you live in Indiana or out of state? Have you been to IU? Are most of the buildings the older, limestone style? Or are there a lot of the '50s, '60s structures that take away from the beauty of the historical architecture? I know sometimes schools will show their most beautiful buildings in their literature and it could be only a handful. My daughter is really into those “traditional college campuses”. We don’t see as many of those out here in California.

I live out of state (Ohio). The acceptance package from Indiana University is what told me what automatic academic scholarship I received. A separate package from the Hutton Honors College is what told me that I was invited to join the Honors College. Both were received in the snail mail. The one from Indiana University came in a big white envelope, whereas the one from Hutton Honors College came in a big brown one. They were both received on the same day…

I received them only about a week after my acceptance e-mail so you should be getting it soon! Unfortunately I have not had an opportunity to visit campus yet so I can’t comment on the buildings there… I agree with you in that it looks nice in the pictures though! Best of luck!

No one has been able to apply for housing yet, right?

Is this something a student does after he or she accepts the offer? Or before? Since my daughter won’t be hearing back from most of her schools until April, she doesn’t want to commit to housing just yet. On the other hand, how does that work? Will they let you choose housing and put a deposit down before telling them you’re going there? Is it non-refundable? I wouldn’t want her to miss out on decent housing because she chose to wait. Any thoughts or tips?

I started a new thread with my message.

You’re supposed to apply for housing after you’re accepted. It is a $300 deposit, but if you decide you don’t want to go to IU in the end, they will give you $200 back. So applying for housing doesn’t commit you to the school.

The reason I’m asking whether anyone has been able to do it is because I keep going to what I think is the correct web page and it keeps saying this year’s housing app is not yet available. So if anyone has been able to apply for housing yet, I’d like to know what site they are on.

The acceptance email has a link to housing, but that links says that the 2010-2011 housing application will be available in mid-November. ??? There are a few steps to the housing process. When we visited campus, my daughter was told that housing applications would not be processed until a $300 housing deposit was received ($200 is refundable up until July 1st). Students who choose Living Learning Centers would be assigned first/before students applying for general housing. We were also told that this housing is determined by deposit date (first come, first served). For students bringing a car to campus, their parking location would also be determined by enrollment deposit date.

I got in to kelley. Its not my tops, but its a great worst-case scenario. My moms really into it though. I’ll probably go visit in spring. Congrats everybody!

I notice when my daughter filled out her housing app. today they didn’t ask her questions about her habits, such as: Is she a messy or neat person? Late or early riser? The questions that might be helpful in matching her with a roommate. Do they do this later or not at all? Just curious! I was just checking out UCLA’s housing videos and they mentioned this was something they asked.

IU doesn’t really ask “matching” type questions. Surprisingly many students do end up liking, or at least peacefully co-existing with, their roommates. I’m still amazed at how much alike D and her roommate are. They give each other space for other friends, etc. but really are friends and do things together. At the beginning of the year roommates are required to create a roommate agreement to work out some of the details of living together. They review this with their RA.

They told us last spring at the admitted students “Red Carpet” session that they don’t do any type of matching because they’ve found their success rate to be just as good by randomly putting people together. My D is in the Kelley LLC which means at least the people in her dorm have similar academic interests, but other than that you get what you get. It’s working out fine. There was a questionnaire put up by a student on the IU Class of 2013 Facebook site last year that some people used to find roommates, so that’s always an option if you’d like to find someone in advance.

That’s interesting about the Facebook roommate-match. I doubt my daughter would take advantage of something like that, though. I think what you said about specifying LLCs and thematic communities is a good start in finding someone with common interests. For her, Sports and Society seems like a fun way to participate in events and activities where she’ll find like-minded friends…including a roommate.

It’s funny, because she no longer plays a sport. (Used to play recreational basketball and throughout middle school and freshman year of h.s.) Instead, she’s concentrated her time on singing in the school Choir and Jazz ensemble. Loves to sing! But yet, she’s not interested in living in a music-type community. I’m sure she’ll want to join an A Cappella group, though.

Sort of an anecdotal note. DD recently mentioned the Facebook pairings that went on last spring/summer. The random pairings are working out much better than the Facebook pairings. I do think that when one lives in an LLC or a thematic community there is at least some common ground from the start. I would strongly recommend one for anyone considering IU.

Okay, so my daughter got her official acceptance in the mail today–the envelope that says “You’re in!” And, it notified her of her $36,000 automatic scholarship. However, I didn’t see any mention of the Hutton Honors College or SSA. I remember ElizaB saying that came in a brown envelope the same day she received the acceptance letter. Should my daughter just wait a few more days to see if that arrives? Or should see notify IU asking them about HHC? I know she qualifies with her stats.

Thanks!

can someone help me pls? ive just been accepted by email but the email didnt mention anything abt hutton or ssa or direct admit. will i get these in the mail or does this mean i didnt qualify???

2leashes:…do not despair. FYI…I don’t know that HHC has specific “stats” which qualify one for admittance, but I’m guessing most kids who get the $9,000 year do get invited (hopefully she’ll receive her “Achieve” scarf soon!..they’ve already mailed them out, so…I don’t know their procedure, but…hopefully).

My D got an e-mail first. I can’t remember what it said.

Then she got the “You’re In” package in the mail. That DID speak to her automatic scholarships, and an offer to apply for SSA. In describing SSA it said that any HHC scholarships would come from this application too. But it did NOT invite her to HHC.

About 1-2 weeks AFTER this…she received a SEPARATE (manilla?) envelope inviting her to HHC. You won’t be able to confuse it, it’s very specific, and includes a post card to mail back by 5/1 if you decide to accept the offer to join HHC.

I’m sure the difference in timing of receiving it just has to do with the level of “busy” at IU. FIRST they process your app, then send it onward to HHC for their processing if applicable. So, if they’re not busy, this could happen quickly (the poster who got theirs on the same day). But, at this time of year it might be delayed a bit.

re hutton honors etc:
son got acceptance letter november 2. in that letter he got the iu distinction scholarship and a sentence that said you have qualified to submit a selective scholarship app. attached was directions on how to set up iu onestart account. this was followed by another letter about hutton and an email.
if you go to the onestart account, on the left hand side under financial is the ssa application. it will have a deadline for submission (my son’s was incorrect saying deadline was may 1…i called ms baker who quickly checked it and got the date corrected…it is normally 30 days from notification) his date was changed to jan 15 (a little extra time due to confusion) BUT we then received an email that said…although you have until jan 15, to be considered for MAJOR scholarships EVERYTHING must be in by dec 15. The ssa app requires more essays, listing of honors, ec’s etc and 2 lor.

from the letters here is some contact info. if you didnt receive the email about hutton/ssa email iussa@indiana.edu or call 812-855-3555 If you can talk to ms baker she is wonderful
