Congrats to everyone! And way to go Elizn19. It’s so nice to read these posts. My son’s letter hasn’t arrived yet, but we’re just so happy to know he’s gotten into a college. Tulane definitely has a place in our hearts!

Thank you guys a ton! My application went to complete last Sunday… the 6th? and I was informed of my acceptance on last Tuesday…the 8th. So I guess like nine days to get the letter. I live in PA so whatever that means!
Best of luck to everyone!!

I just checked my application status online and I was accepted! How do I know if I received any merit-based scholarship, though?

congrats highopes!! scholarship info comes snail mail! son’s came about a week after he was accepted online

Hey I got my letter today and there was no password or username to log onto the admitted students website. What should I do?

AWS- the same thing happened to me. email your regional coordinator with your gibson login information and they’ll gladly assist you!

Just recieved my “official” acceptance letter.

$20k/yr scholarship was attached :)

Just got my letter with a $25k/year scholarship and honors program invite! I’m so happy and surprised (especially at the scholarship! omg!), and this definitely just moved Tulane up on my list.
ALSO, I’m so glad/surprised to have gotten my letter because up until today (when I checked after getting the letter) I was still having the “multiple accounts” problem and it said online that I hadn’t even submitted my application part 2, personal statement, or SAT scores yet…

I got my letter awhile ago: Accepted with 22k a year.

I am very excited to have been accepted but my acceptance letter came with no mention of $, only a page attached that talks about when to send in deposits, accepted student receptions etc. Does that mean that I have received no aid at all? What should I do/what should I have done previously?

jdhjdh - Congratulations! The acceptance letter would include any merit aid, not financial aid. It also would not include the Deans or Community Service Scholarships.

jdhjdh - What are your stats? GPA W and UW, class rank if you have it, SAT or ACT scores, and AP’s taken/in progress. Also EC’s are useful to know. Knowing this we can give you better advice.

Thanks to all who have posted on here. Very good info!
Son was accepted to Tulane last week. $25k presidential scholar and admission to honors.
36 ACT
Lots of AP and honors classes
3.7 gpa 4.2 weighted
Not sure on class rank
Average EC’s but works around 30 hrs per week.
U of Kansas offered him a full tuition, books, room, and board scholarship.
Was sort of excited when he recieved the letter from Tulane. Looked on the web site and realized it costs $52k. Not sure whether to be excited about $25k from Tulane or concerned he will want to go there and it will cost me $25k+.
He is also looking at several other schools - Vandy, Davidson, Wash U, etc.
If the education from Tulane superior enough to a good public school (like KU) to justify the additional cost? Will the investment pay off in the future? I guess we don’t know yet. He wants to study Applied Math.

I wish you had posted earlier, like 3 weeks ago. Tulane has a scholarship that is full tuition, but it is a competition and submissions were due by Dec 15. He certainly would be a good candidate. But if he didn’t apply it is water under the bridge, so let’s talk about your question.

Tulane indeed offers a very fine education, and the Honors Program enhances that for many students. However, for an undergraduate education KU (which I actually know something about being from Missouri and having relatives that were traitors and went to KU) also offers excellent opportunities. But you probably couldn’t have two more different experiences otherwise. Lawrence vs. New Orleans. Large school vs. smaller, with class sizes that mirror this difference, especially freshman and sophomore years. Largely geographically homogeneous student body of midwesterners vs. one of the most geographically diverse student bodies. Competitive Div ! sports school vs. not so much anymore, except for baseball. So on and so forth. And then there is the money.

I have always advocated that a university education is a value proposition like many other economic decisions. Are you looking at $100,000 of debt after 4 years, or is this relatively affordable for you? I mean I know $100K is a lot for almost anyone except a few very rich, but it is all relative. So if the $100K can be saved for his future (i.e. would be unavailable for him otherwise), be that grad school or, since science/math students often get grants for grad school, to help him start out in life after school, such as a down payment on a house, then I would say save the money. Unless he really seems to be the type where a smaller school, warm weather envronment would really make him suit him well, or the opposite, a large school environment would make him unhappy.

As you can tell by now, there is no easy answer. A lot of it is personal to your financial situation and him as a person. I would definitely say that if he had to carry the debt, I wouldn’t do it. That is a lousy way to start one’s professional life when there is an opportunity to start debt free. There is no way to say going to Tulane, Vandy, Wash U, even Harvard would pay off to the tune of that much debt. Especially if he is going to grad school. If so, getting a PhD from Harvard, Princeton, whereever is tops in his field will make much more difference. And going to KU will not hurt his chances to get into those grad schools compared to the private schools, it will be much more about his grades, GRE scores, research, and recommendations.

Congrats on having such an accomplished son.

Thanks so much for your reply fallenchemist. Yes, we did miss the deadline for the Dean’s scholarship - Bummer. Tulane looks like great school.
$100k is a stretch but doable.
Yes - KU is a very large school. I went to a large school and you tend to get lost and at times treated like a number rather than a student, unless you put in a lot of effort to bond with your profs and advisors. Although he was accepted into the KU honors program. This should shrink the big school down a bit and give him some individual attention, if he chooses to go there.
He is still applying and waiting to hear from other schools. I guess we’ll wait to hear from everyone, narrow it down to 3-4, make some visits, and decide what he wants to do.
Thanks again!

Accepted to Tulane last week. $25k presidential scholar and admission to honors.
2320 SAT (790 CR, 760 M, and 770 W)
3.9 UW GPA
Rank: top 1 percent

Does anyone know if they will consider a Dean’s scholarship app that has a Dec. 15th postmark on it?

Ivan - There was someone else that had that same question and they called the office at Tulane. A Dec. 15 postmark is acceptable.

Great stats, congratulations. And Good luck!

Accepted Today!
2350 (800,750M,800)
3.81/4 GPA (Top 10%)
National AP Scholar, State Page, otherwise pretty bleh ECS.

Presidential 25k/yr and Honors College!

Kinda bummed I didn’t apply for the Deans scholarship (although I might have, I don’t remember what you had to do for it).

THIS IS SO AWESOME! :D

So many great students! If Tulane gets most of you, or even half of you, that would be fantastic.

Tilgaham - You would remember if you applied for the DHS. It requires doing something creative with a 3"x3" “box”.

Congrats on your scholarship!

Appreciate it! Unfortunately even with the 25k/yr I’m still going to need a sizeable chunk of aid to attend. Hope their finaid is good. I sure wouldn’t mind getting some Gumbo and going to Marti Gras every year. Woot!
