Accepted!

I have heard that Vanderbilt was called “The Harvard of the South.”

kherb - LOL, that was out of the blue!! Anyway, lots of schools have called themselves the “Harvard of the {region}”, including Tulane and Duke for the South, along with Vandy. Wash U did it in the midwest, and I feel quite confident there have been others. I think it all died when people realized how silly it sounded. At least I hope so. Maybe Harvard sued for all I know. I am sure their intentions were good in trying to say they were academically strong, but neither Tulane nor Vandy, nor Duke for that matter, are Harvard in any sense they might mean it, and personally I think that is a good thing. Nothing against Harvard per se, like I always say on here it is all about fit. And clearly many people thrive at Harvard. But as I know from personal observation and many anecdotes from students that have attended, as well as the fact that there have been whole books on this topic, schools like Harvard tend to have faculties that are far more focused on their research and consulting than on undergrads. Not all of course, but far more so than schools like Tulane and Wash U. My D had a decent shot at Harvard with her credentials, they did “recruit” her. But she rejected them for that very reason. And with the recent changes in Tulane’s culture towards service combined with academics, I would say it is more unique than ever.

Anyway, my two cents on that.

First off, my Harvard of the South comment was not meant to praise or denigrate Harvard. I only know it as the place JFK went and where Ollie in Love Story attended. I think I actually heard the Harvard of the South comment from Howie Mandel when he was on Saint Elsewhere. Now I’m dating myself for sure!

The regular Copeland’s on Saint Charles is indeed closed. The Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro is further down by the Pontchartrain Hotel, close to the CBD. Food is fantastic, including the cheesecake.

I did hear that someone bought the regular Napoleon/Saint Charles location and will open another restaurant there. Sadly, regular Copeland’s will not return. I often brought visiting Miami classmates there for New Orleans/Cajun food where I could count on quality and not a long wait or hefty bill. I would often lunch there when working in the area. Nice view of the streetcars going by.

As for weather in February, well, Mardi Gras will be in mid February this year. It will either be very cold and rainy, or nice. It’s most beautiful in early March. I never go to Mardi Gras, but my son’s birthday is in early March, and it’s always a nice day.

To the visitor in February, please watch your dates. If you are coming the week of or the week before Mardi Gras, you will have trouble getting a hotel room. And don’t forget about flights. Flying out of Moisant during Mardi Gras week is a nightmare! Unless you’re hoping to “enjoy” Mardi Gras and visit campus at the same time, I really would not recommend that time as a campus visit time. Tulane “rents” out rooms to students’ friends during Mardi Gras, and the young people you’ll see on campus may not actually be Tulane students. You may get a skewed view of Tulane at this time. As a parent, I would definitely not recommend you visit at that time.

For those of you who don’t know, Mardi Gras is the day before Ash Wednesday. Even for you non Catholics, most calendars do list when Ash Wednesday is, so you won’t be left in the dark.

Again, as FC suggested, we need to resurrect the hotel, restaurant threads on this forum, as accepted students will be coming down to visit.

Even if my son is not accepted, as a “proud” citizen of New Orleans, and just naturally friendly Southerner, I’m always happy to help with suggestions, words of caution, to our visitors.

At one point years and years ago I attended a third or fourth tier regional university that was called “Harvard on the La Moine” (river). Of course it was the only college on the La Moine.

Sooo I received my acceptance letter in the mail today, but it gave me no password or login info for the admitted students page… anyone else have this problem? What should I do?

Neither did my son, about two weeks after the letter he got an email asking if he was planning to enroll and if so, to send in a deposit. When I pressed the submit button to pay - it forwarded us to the accepted students website and allowed us to sign up for an accepted students weekend. So keep checking your email.

How long do you have to let them know you’re planning to enroll, and how much is the deposit?

I just found out I got in!! I can’t believe it because I am not in the top quarter of my class so I just applied for the heck of it and got in!!!

Now I just hope I can afford it

Have any of you tried to call and or email and get a quick response? Tried calling and just got voicemail, never could get thru. Also emailed…just wondered if you have any suggestions.

collegesgirl - I can only counsel patience right now. They are super busy and unless you have a reason to think there is some screw-up regarding your application, just take a few deep breaths and relax. Tulane is one of the earliest schools to notify students out of the top institutions. Inhale, exhale…Inhale, exhale. I do think e-mailing is OK though. They will get back to you as soon as they can I am sure. Did you e-mail your adcom directly or just admissions"? I would e-mail your specific adcom.

onthefly - Congrats! Top quarter can be OK depending on your high school, and if you took a fair number of AP’s. And there are many other factors too. What were your test scores?

Scorpio - You don’t have to let them know until May 1. I cannot remember now how much the deposit is, but it seems to me like it was rather small. $250? $500? Something like that. Small compared to tuition, fees and room/board, anyway!

collegesgirl - i can’t help you with the email thing, but as for phone calls - they’re open from 10 (i think) to 5 pm (their time). I know on the east coast, we’re an hour later (maybe 2??) so keep those things in mind.

No problem… have tried different days, etc. over the last 2 weeks, hard to get thru. Also emailed some time ago and didn’t hear. When I meant quick, I didn’t expect the same day, but compared to other responses it seems slow. Wondered if this was common. I just called/emailed generaly admissions (vs. specific person). Not the end of the world, perhaps they will see it soon.

collegesgirl - true, not the end of the world. They are at their busiest time now, I think. Certainly one of the busiest. Do you know how to find your specific adcom? If not I can help you. I think it is perfectly OK to write them, that is what they are there for. Besides, shows you really want it.

I received my acceptance letter on October 19th and have not received any login information for the admitted student website.

I got accepted with $25k/ year and invitation to honors program.

My son was accepted to Tulane the Monday before Thanksgiving on their website. He finally received his acceptance letter in the mail 12/05/2009. Its the first school he’s heard from so he is excited. We’re from Wisconsin are their many students from the midwest?

Got accepted. #1 choice. Go Saints Go Green Wave.

Just got accepted tonight Surreal…

Stats:
CT

3.0-3.1 W GPA
2100/1460 SAT
Not a lot of ECs (Newspaper, Martial Arts)
AP Euro, AP Physics B, AP Econ

Didn’t think I would get in. Sick…

hge - Your SAT’s pulled you through most likely, those are fairly strong. And it isn’t always the quantity of EC’s but often how much you put into them, and if they pick up on that. Congratulations.

Jason - Fantastic. Very happy for you.

daecollege - 16% from the midwest [Tulane Admission: Getting Into Tulane](http://admission.tulane.edu/apply/gettinginto.php)

Congrats to everyone!
