Just letting y'all know that they keep their word about the 48-hour turnaround...

Nice:)! One of my long time friends attends Iowa State <3

Congratulations!!
Iowa State was our DD’s first acceptance and set the bar for every other school to follow. The best part of getting such an early acceptance is that you are sitting pretty for housing and scholarship $$!!! Do a happy dance and enjoy the day!

Thanks, I’m way more excited than I expected to be! :)

The mayor of Ames still sends form letters to admitted OOS students :)

You’ll receive many letters of congratulations from this school. We visited some 20 schools and D was accepted to all she applied. Many were not nearly as enthusiastic (including state flagship) as Iowa State. They really know how to show “the love!”

^ And, indeed, I got my scholarship letter yesterday.

Yay! I hope it makes attendance even more probable. You are very fortunate to be in such a great position at this point in your senior year. So many have not even begun to apply. Just know Iowa State is a school that provides tremendous opportunities. Our D participated in the career fair this past week as a freshman and had a great experience. She may have a part-time job this fall and an internship this summer! Already, being a Cyclone may be paying off… Congratulations again!!

My son also received the letter about the 48 hour turn around on decisions. Did you guys send transcripts? I know it said not to but my son needs merit aid and I thought it might boost his chance.

Is anyone familiar with the honors college or aerospace engineering? This school wasn’t even on our radar until information came in the mail.

Don’t hesitate, send the transcripts. The sooner the better.

Our D is in the Honors program. From what I can tell, it seems to be a great community of students who get together in a class setting as well as social events. These students are enthusiastic and involved on campus. The honors building is open only to honors students and is a terrific place to study and visit with other students. Also, priorty registration is a huge benefit.

Iowa State is very well regarded in engineering. The career fair is amazing. Our freshman daughter is a comp sci major and got a job for this semester testing software. She is in second round interviews for summer internships. If nothing else, the exposure she is getting, out of the gate, is very impressive. We are so glad our D decided to attend Iowa State. The people are more than friendly, the campus is beautiful, fabulous opportunities. Absolutely no regrets.

^^ I didn’t send transcripts. The self-reported information is all they need for the decision. I’m not really sure how you benefit by sending them, but maybe there’s a reason…?

noimagination, when did you apply? Also, Congrats on being admitted!

Congrats, hokiefan & noimagination.
I agree with GLAW. ISU has been a great place for my son.
He is a ChemE major and in the Honors program.

Good luck with your decision.

Now that we have the transcript part ironed out, how about merit aid? We are OOS so merit aid is a must. My son has a 34 ACT and a 4.8 W GPA. Lots so ECs. Any more comments on engineering would be helpful. Oh, how are the dorms? Thanks.

Your son’s stats are similar to our D’s. She received great merit $ from all of the schools she applied to including Iowa State. She is staying in one of the newer dorms and she loves the modern amenities. It is suite style, has air conditioning and lofted beds. The study lounges are plenitful and it is close to the engineering side of campus. The brand new rec center under construction is right there on that side too. The food is nothing like what we had in school. She tells us of amazing meals, desserts and the orange juice is out of this world!

GLAW,

If I may ask, what other schools did your daughter applied to? That is great news about the dorms. It seems most schools have the usual, 2 kids in a room the size of a shoebox. That is what my daughter has experienced at a very pricy private school. My son took one look at that situation and said no thanks. My daughter is used to it so it does not bother her. It is funny how all kids are different.

Oh, how many kids are in the engineering school? Still trying to hunt that type of number down. As I mentioned, my son is interested in aerospace.

I was admitted within two business days of applying, so probably the Monday of that week or Friday of the previous week.
There are lots of scholarships on the IAState site, many encouraging diversity or leadership.

As far as straight academic merit aid is concerned, the best available seems to be the Level I Award for Competitive Excellence. My awards letter was customized for my state - I am also OOS - so requirements may vary depending on where you are from. My letter gave the following requirements for an L1 ACE worth $7k per year for all four years:

Math - Through 1 year of calculus (not precalc)
Science - 3 years (physics, bio, or chem in some combination)
Foreign Language - 3 years of a single language or 2 years of 2 languages
GPA - 3.30+ [I believe you can choose weighted or unweighted…?]
Test Scores - ACT of 28+ or SAT CR&M of 1240+

$7k/yr seems to be the highest amount automatically awarded for academics, but you might be able to get more through other criteria. Check the website for details.

A little less than 5,500 undergrads and a little over 1,000 grad students. There were 94 AeroEs graduating in the class of 2010.
