I applied as a mechanical engineering major. I called early last week and they said I should receive a decision within 2 weeks.

hmmm, my financial aid package really disappointing too. compared to the merit scholarship alone. wpi actually was better.

The portal told me I had nothing so far, and the packet also didn’t inform me of any scholarships…maybe I didn’t get any? Or when they mail you the financial aid package they’ll inform you of money.

as it turns out drexel would still be a better deal but only by like 900 dollars. I thought Drexel would come through more because they gave me so much merit

i haven’t heard yet either and i applied on November 6th for architecture. It says that we should hear by March 31st for Westphal

i guess most of us are in the same boat… great expectations met with disappointing results, i think drexel should really try to stop over exaggerating just how much money they give, it only creates false hope!

The only thing that would me keep me going there is money from the coops.

Sometimes co-op is not always a “paid” co-op. Depending on a lot of things (i.e. experience, the economy, etc.) you may not get a salary for that co-op. My son got a non-paid co-op this year, this is his 1st co-op. However, where he’s working is awesome!!! I’m sure he will learn a lot, it will definitely look good on his resume; yeah, he’s basically working for free, it wasn’t what he or we expected, he’s still thankful he got something b/c some students are still lookiing for co-op for this next semester.

jersey4ever -
Congrats to your son for finding a co-op experience that is both educational and enjoyable.
If you don’t mind my asking, what is your son’s major? Are his friends from the same major? I would imagine that some fields are tougher than others for finding co-ops.

For anyone considering attending Drexel, co-ops are not just about the pay (although it helps), but the experience, the networking, and the ability to narrow down the direction you want to go with your degree/career. The possibility of an unpaid co-op and its effect on your COA is definitely something that must be weighed into the equation.

It’s going to be about the pay for me. I’ll worry about the experience once I can afford to go there.

SnLMom: I couldn’t have said it better in your last paragraph… I just wanted to put it out there that not all co-ops are paid co-ops. Son’s major is Business. His friends are all different majors. Engineer co-ops seem competitve. In my opinion, if he was anywhere else, he wouldn’t have had this opportunity…

How much help did the Drexel staff provide for your son when it came to seeking a co-op position? If this is his 1st co-op, I am assuming that he is and a 5-yr/3-co-op track? I would think that as he gains more experience and education, he will more than likely find a paid co-op. We all know it is still a tough market out there!

I believe that just the process of finding co-ops offers a great learning experience. It provides good preparation for finding permanent employment upon graduation by ironing the wrinkles and shaking out the nerves. Hopefully they will be more poised and relaxed when that time comes.

SnLMom: it is a great learning experience, to be in your 2nd year in college, interviewing and networking is awesome. Son actually got a couple non-paid, also got a paid, but he was an alternate. He was advised if he selected the alternate he might not get any co-op so it was like a catch-22. At the same time, he didn’t want to go into B round or look for a job independently. Son feels confident that next year he’ll get a paid co-op. Drexel prepares you, it’s up to you to follow-through. They are not going to hold your hand. My nephew is a graduate from Drexel (computer science). He was hired from a co-op that he did, he travels overseas, he’s done very well for himself; but, of course, the economy was better…

International, When Drexel accepted my D it included a scholarship offer $21,000 in the letter. Now we were accepted months ago but still have not receive a COA financial aid offer form yet. I’m not sure you applied early enough for scholarships. When did you apply? You should have been given a similar offer as my D. Your numbers of 1530 could have got you a free ride at Pitt. or at least full tuition.
