My son just got accepted to Samford. Anyone else? Anyone have tips on getting scholarships there?

My middle son just got accepted. Samford is pretty high on his list – SMU might be his top choice but not sure if he’ll get in, and it’s much farther from home. There is no separate application process for scholarships at Samford. They just use the base application, and notifications of awards are made in the spring.

Thanks razordad. We still haven’t heard any scholarship news but my son did apply for a separate departmental scholarship. He has received academic scholarship offers from 3 other schools, but we’d like to hear from Samford so we can compare. Maybe they are waiting for our FAFSA. I’ll post when we hear something so others can see the timing.

Daughter just got an $8 annual scholarship award. Letter dated Feb 10, 2011

Do you mind sharing her approximate stats?

My daughter also received award letter about a week ago. $7,000 sounds great but I think we will have to stick with less expensive public school. Stats are average ACT 25 GPA 4.0 weighted.

DS got the letter scholarship letter yesterday. Very happy to say he was offered $10,500. The $500 was a legacy scholarship, which surprised us because his only legacy is a cousin who went there years ago! The letter specifically said that this was not the result of FAFSA, so we are hoping for some more after they review that. Also, he got a phone call from a current student (2nd one, I think) - nice touch! We are impressed with this school.

Son got his scholarship letter as well – $12,500 per year, which was a nice surprise.

Son just received Merit Scholarship totaling $15,850.00. I understand Samford releases scholarship monies in waves, high - higher-highest over the course of weeks in February/March. Although the wait is long, I do like the way Samford covers all merit possibilities at one time…son’s award included school of business/academic/legacy/leadership scholarships. Good luck to all. It is an excellent school.

bluemerle, that is interesting that they send them out lowest to highest, and that is exactly how it looks when reading the dates on these posts! Do you have any knowledge of how/when they review the FAFSA and give out need-based aid? I’m wondering if it’s on a rolling basis or do they wait and do them all in April like some schools.

Sounds like you all did well in getting scholarship money. My senior did not fair so well and is really down. We waited so long also for an award. The actual cost of attendance is $38,000 not $29,000 as listed on web site. I will never understand the whole concept of the EFC on the FASFA. I have heard for years to not avoid applying to schools that you think are too expensive because of all the grants and endowments that are available. What do kids with good grades but average standardized tests score do? Large state schools with lower costs are not a good fit for everyone. Any ideas?

I see that your son received a merit scholarship to Samford last year for over $15,000. My daughter and I just visited Samford yesterday and she absolutely loves it! She has toured several others but she says this is the one! She has been accepted and we have been told that scholarships will be sent so out later this month (February) but we are anxious and wondered if you might share your son’s stats to see where my daughter might fit in the $$. She has a 31 ACT, is valedictorian and has a 4.2. Thanks!

Hope to hear from Samford soon! Hope the wait is worthwhile!

Has anyone heard from Samford for this year?

We got the merit notification letter yesterday. 11,000 merit and 2,000 Latin American Scholars. We are very excited but it is hardv when schools are becoming so expensive.

Went to scholars day; scholarships range from $7K to full tuition.
S rec’d $12K; 2 others I know rec’d $13K; on this site shows a merit scholarship within the Presidenatil range; wonder if Samford distributes $$$$ above 50% …and if Scholars day is really a buisness tool to obtain as many top students and the school receive income

I understand that Samford offers Beasons Scholarships which are full rides to a variable number of students each year. Has anyone had any experience with the application process for the Beasons? How many were given this year?
