ACCEPTEES!!--why chicago?

For those of you who have been accepted at UChicago..what did you write on the why chicago part?

I'm wondering what aspects of this university people take into account.

hello acceptees!!

For me, it was the physics department that drew me in at first, but then I realized how much respect the school commanded. The CEO of my dad's company (who knows a lot about colleges and where to find/put quality people) said that it is simply an elite group of people. It is my opinion that some of the school's prestige is lost due to its unfortunate monicker, which many people associate with University of Illinois-Chicago, as it is a common mistake. I wrote on how I liked their focus on rigorous and well-rounded academics.

I am pretty excited about my EA acceptance. I might consider it over HPM, should I be a common admit.

i said the hackneyed thing, which is that i wanted to go the chicago for the life of the mind, the intellectual climate that pervades the campus and the students. but the reason that i was hapy with it and that i thought that it was a good essay was because, since i really do want to go there for those reasons, it seemed genuine even though every applicant surely wrote something similar. i guess what im saying is that you dont have to write anything original, you just have to make sure that you convey a real interest and desire to attend.

I agree. What I wrote was done very quickly because I knew my reasons already. Unfortunately, they were a little hackneyed, but I made reference to specific things and people within the physics department. I wrote something a long the lines of avoiding the "Dilbert" image often associated with scientists and engineers who are good, but lack social and verbal skills, as well as well-rounded knowledge. Chicago will teach me so much more than just numbers.

I prefaced the fact that what I wrote was "typical". I respect UChicago because they care to think and make students actually work. UChicago expects more from you than you knew you had in you.

I wrote about I how I need to continue my growth as an intellectual, and only through Chicago's rigorous and diverse core programs will I be able to achieve this. I likened Chicago students to "Renaissance" men and women.

I wrote about the school's unabashed and sincere intellectuality and its awesome sense of humor, the core, etc. I also spent time on how I had been so impressed by how Chicago grads seemed to speak so well and thoughtfully--they truly seem like the most considerate human beings I know. Yay. Hi acceptees!

i talked about the life of the mind, etc. i guess it's what everyone wrote, but it worked for me.
ps: hi sarahbara, haven't seen many of the crowd from EA time on here recently...

A lot of the EA crowd got accepted into Ivies..so they don't come here anymore....

that's kind of rude of them....

thats kind of lame of them

chicago is much cooler than the ivies (well I suppose it depends on what you want to study...if you dont want any of the core classes...chicago probobly sucks)

Huzzah for EA folk who were actually sincere in wanting to go to Chicago!

I'm currently a junior and curious if any EA acceptees/RD applicants know about Chicago's Computer Science program?

Being that its at chicago, its going to be a strong program. From what I have looked at in the course guide, it looks promising but also being that it is at chicago, you will have to be willing to do work in other subjects. It's not a computer science program for someone who doesnt want to do anything but mess with computers. You are going to have to complete the Core alongside the compsi courses.

ottothecow: Thank you for your informative post.

i am an EA admit who is sincere in wanting to go to chicago, i have just begun lurking since theres no pulsating conversation since the EA boom. hi all again though
