Accepting a waitlist offer after depositing elsewhere

Waited till the last moment to get the result from the waitlisted. But didnt get the acceptance or denial. So went head and made the deposit into another University which i like it great also. Now I am cleared of the waitlisted and accepted. Can I make the deposit here and accept this offer..
Is there any legal or ethical issues involved. Will it affect any of my admission chances in either of them.
I dont want to mess up and land up in no where. Please advice

Yes you can accept the waitlist school. You would lose the deposit at the first school but schools expect this to happen - they know most waitlist offers happen after the May 1 deadline.

Oh and just make sure you notify the first school if you choose not to attend. Good luck!

The way the waitlist system works, and all colleges are well aware of this, is that if a student clears the waitlist at a preferred school, after depositing elsewhere, that student has the option to accept the spot on the waitlist and withdraw from the school where s/he deposited. Usually no refund is given, though some schools will return housing deposits.

Got the admission off the waitlist on May 8th to the second school.
Made the deposit to the first school before May 1st.
How long we can take to inform the first school about the withdrawal. (obviously, we wont get the deposit back). And how to communicate.?

BTW, are you going to Case or somewhere else?
