If you pay the $200 (nonrefundable) deposit and say that you will accept U-M's offer of admission, but in the coming weeks get accepted into a reach school, is there a problem with telling U-M that you have decided on another school?

It seems that there is an advantage to sending in the deposit, since you can get on the list for housing, orientation, and things like that... but you may not have heard from all your schools until the second week of April.

What's the general concensus about how to proceed at this point?

If I were you, I would wait until you find out from your other school. As you mentioned, the 200$ fee is nonrefundable and Michigan probably wouldn’t appreciate you pulling out last second. I think that you could submit the deposit, but you would have to give them a reason as to why you arn’t attending and it is frowned upon. Also the only possible benefit will be perhaps the housing priority. Some schools give preference based on when you submit the payment and others do not. Orientation and other stuff will not be affected and since their is plenty of housing maybe if you have your heart set on a specific place, you could submit your deposit but if I were you, I would hold off.

There’s no benefit to paying early. Just wait, Michigan doesn’t give any housing or orientation priority to people that pay early.

Why wait until May 1? You should have heard back from all the universities you applied to by April 1. You can send your deposit by April 5-10.

The only benefit to sending in the deposit is that you need the deposit to be sent in for orientation and housing application. The orientation sign up comes out in early April and the housing not until after the May deadline.

I would consider waiting for your reach schools. If you get waitlisted there send in the $200. Michigan won’t care if you back out but you won’t get the money back.
