Access to a piano?

Hi! I was wondering if non-music majors have access to pianos on campus? If so, where could I go to play? I love to play, but I don't have anything in my apartment yet...Thanks!

Have you tried calling the music department to see if they will let non-piano majors use the practice rooms?

I had the same problem at UT, long ago, and just gave up. There was a piano in the lobby of Scottish Rite Dorm, but it was too exposed for me to feel comfortable playing it very often. The music building was too far away from that side of campus for me to get to very easily. I didn’t play again seriously until I got my first job and could afford lessons. Then kids came along, and all they wanted to hear was “Wheels on the Bus!”

This is something I’ve asked about at various schools. Usually there is a piano around somewhere vaguely public that you can play. Practice rooms are usually open to non-music-majors with the understanding that you can get kicked out by those who need to practice.

There’s a piano in the honors dorms, in one of the lobbies or study rooms; I know I have seen it. I think I recall seeing a really pretty piano in the “parlor” lobby at Littlefield, too. Don’t you want everyone who walks by listen to you? Especially if you haven’t played for weeks? Good luck.

Let us know what you find out; this seems like such a reasonable question - can a non-music major get at practice room piano at UT? I wonder if you have to be taking a music class or lessons that semester to have access to practice rooms.

There are 3 pianos in the honors quad; one in the Blanton lobby, one in the Andrews lobby, and one in the Carothers lobby. The one in Carothers is really nice; the one in Blanton is pretty old and out of tune; the one in Andrews is pretty good. There are always people playing them. I know there’s also one in Kinsolving by the Gallery of Great Women or whatever it’s called, but I wouldn’t want to play there since there are people shuffling in and out all day to eat…

there’s a piano in jester east lobby

There’s a piano in the little underground room that connects Roberts and Brackenridge…but its old and probably needs a tuning.

There’s a piano in the lobby of Duren Hall. And it’s great =D

There’s a piano in one of the lounges at San Jac. People will be able to hear you play as they walk by but it isn’t that bad. There are people playing all the time. And the lounge is open to everyone.

There are pianos in many residence halls. Also, there is a piano in the Texas Gallery in Jester West.
