access to reccos not waived....problem?

I ticked off the "I DO NOT waive my right to....." option without really understanding the system. I know, stupid. So now I'm in a conundrum. Will this go against me because colleges will now think that I've fudged all my reccos?

Have you already submitted your app? It won’t really go against you, but I think they really prefer you to waive…

My daughter was working on the App today and asked me to look over that question. If you read it, it talked about you having access (if the school kept it) AFTER you matriculate (i.e. if you think you might want to see what your h.s. anatomy teacher said about you as you prepare to graduate from college). Although she waived the rights (said she didn’t care to see what they wrote), as far as I understand it, it’s legaleeze – maybe someone with more knowledge of FERPA can chime in?

colleges will definitely not presume you fudged your recs and this waiver doesn’t allow you access to the recs so that you could fudge them. The recs will still be sent to your schools directly by the recommender and will not be shared with you. The waiver you checked will allow you to see the college’s copy of the recommendation after you start school. It does not let you see the recommendations this year at all.

The concern college have about the waiver is not about student’s fudging them (that’s the reason for the sealed-signed enlevopes) … the concern about the waivers is that if a student does not sign the waiver that the person writing the recommendation may not be as honest since they know the student can read the recommendation … and that recommendations written with a waiver might be more honest … and frankly, it seems like a reasonable concern.

Switch seats … you have two candidates one who says here are my references go at it … and one who says here are my references and I want to be able to know what they said … which candidate appears more cconfident and that they are not worried about what might pop up in the recommendation?

you are overthinking this.

I can think of many reasons why you would waive or not. confidence or lack of it isn’t even my top 10. adcoms aren’t going to have a basis for making a presumption about your personality or history based on whether you check the box.
