I submitted the CommonApp w/ essay by mistake (actually, apparently I couldn't preview without the commonapp essay attached), but I wanted my JHU essay #1 to be considered instead.

Is all hope lost? Thanks.

Yes all hope is lost.

Clearly, I am kidding.

If you submitted answers to both JHU essay prompts and also your Common Application essay, all three essays will be reviewed. Nothing to worry about.

^ Wouldn't that give those who submitted three essays an advantage? (since they would have 500 more words with which to convey their background and personality)

There is no advantage, because any applicant could have chosen to submit three essays (the two JHU essays and their common application essay) or submitted a supplemental writing sample.

In the case discussed here, the two JHU essays will be read as the required essays and the CA essay will be read as a supplemental piece of information.

Oh.

I didn't know we were allowed to submit all three... (The supplement said "OR" in big bold letters, so I thought we had to choose only one)

sigh... well, I hope my two essays were well written enough to convey my personality.

That's what I thought too. I suggest that JHU change the wording for next year's applicants, because I didn't find out until I looked at the Hopkins forums, which not all applicants do. ; )

There is actually no reason for us to change our language, because we do not want students submitting three essays. We allow it, since we always allow students to submit supplemental information (including additional essays) but it is not something we require / recommend / urge / want / desire.

We require two essays. Some students send in more than that and since the application is your application we allow it.

ok...my common app essay happened to be about communities...and I submitted it on the supplement (along with my common app essay on common app). So the same essay is read twice?

Not sure if I can answer this any clearer ... EVERYTHING IS READ IN YOUR APPLICATION. If you sent the same essay in twice, we will read it twice.
