Accommodations

Hey, I know this might not be the best place for this thread but I recently found out that I missed the deadline for UCL accommodations and am DESPERATE. I really need to find housing (I will be starting my first year as an undergrad in late September).

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion on how I should find a room or where I should apply. I know of Nido and some other sites, but would prefer some place a bit more reasonably priced. (I will be starting my first year as an undergrad in late September)

What is your budget?

Try student.spareroom.co.uk for UCL or nuroa.co.uk

look for studio flats, they are usually cheapest

Contact UCL. They may have a list of landlords available.

Depending on your budget, you may have to look outside the immediate vicinity of UCL. Get a Tube map and look at the lines with stops close to UCL (from memory this includes Northern, Victoria, Central… not sure what else). UCL is in Zone 1, the centre of London. Rents are progressively less expensive the further out from Zone 1 you go; look to see which areas the relevant Tube lines go to.

Just to give you an idea of costs, I lived in Finchley (Northern Line Zone 4) when I was in London; my flat, a tiny 1-bedroom, cost about £800/month (plus bills etc).

London rents are always extortionate compared to anywhere else in the UK. This is a place where you can spend as much on a garage as you would spend on a decent flat elsewhere.

However, places to try are

Do remember that these “zones” of the London Underground are FARE zones. So as you move out from zone 1, the rents on apartments do go down, but the expense of commuting goes up. You may have to do a little math to make sure you are really saving money, and that the extra fare doesn’t dig too deeply in what you thought you were “saving” by not renting in zone 1.
