According to my calculations, the highest GPA I can get is only...

3.587 unweighted which is pretty bad. Is there a way to increase this number by taking more classes or doing online classes or something? I FEEL LIKE SUCH A FAILURE.

You’re not a failure at all! 3.5 is not a bad GPA, it’s just not prestigious. There are still plenty of good schools you could get into. Or you could always go to community college, do well there, and transfer to a better school.

That’s about a 3.6, which isn’t bad at all. Colleges also take into account improvement - so if you did poorly in 9th grade and that’s what brought your GPA down, it won’t matter. It also looks good to take more challenging classes.

it may be harder to get into top 40 colleges.

This depends entirely on the way your school (or your school system, if you go to public school) calculates grade-point averages.

At my kids’ school, the answer would be no. My kids’ school will give sometimes credit for outside work, but never record letter grades or include grades for outside work in a student’s GPA.

But you really need to ask at your own school.

It’s not a bad GPA, but it’s not going to make you the most impressive or competitive applicant to a college.
