Is there ANY way that I can be an accounting major at U of M without getting into Ross?

Also, I heard that there isn't an accounting major, only like 8 accounting classes. Taking those makes me an accountant, no? Or are they just meaningless when I try to find an accounting job?

If you are looking to be an Accounting major, you will need to be in Ross. However, if you’re looking to find an accounting job, you can take several approaches from LSA.

If you are smart, get a good gpa in one of these majors, find a pretty steady summer/part time job in banking or some accounting position, maybe some EC, you can definitely get a job in accounting when you graduate without going through Ross.

I really want to keep my options open for a major and one of those happens to include accounting. But if actuary science requires accounting classes, maybe it won’t be so different

major in something else and take the accounting classes that ross offers. If I’m not mistaken most of the accounting courses are open to all students and not just ross. Most accounting jobs reqiore “X” amount of accounting credits and you require a certain amount to take the CPA exam. You just need to make sure you have those courses completed and just major in whatever else you want.

When you say you want to be an “accountant”, how do you define that? If you are not going the CPA route then you can be much broader in your approach to your undergraduate education. If you are planning on sitting for the CPA exam, then (in most states) you will need 24 semester hours of accounting classes and 150 total semester hours of college work.
