Hey,
I’m hoping to transfer to UCSC next year to perhaps study accounting. I know that UCSC is not particularly known for their business or accounting programs (not like UCLA, Cal Poly SLO, or USC), but I really love Santa Cruz and would ideally like to go to school there. Is this a silly decision? Would it be a lot harder to get a job in a firm or acquire the necessary skills for accounting at UCSC than a school like Cal Poly? Any information would help.
It is possible to get into accounting with a degree from UCSC because they offer an econ business management degree. If you aspire to get into public accounting and get a CPA license, you probably need to take courses outside of UCSC, i.e., extension courses or courses at a community college if there is a gap.
A person I know from UCSC, who did a summer internship at my company 2 years ago, recently started working at Deloitte, a Big 4 public accounting firm. In a CA Society of CPA’s magazine article, a featured person, graduated from UCSC about 10 years ago in bus. management econ. from UCSC, also took extension and additional community college courses where the person was short. This person became a CPA by working at at Big 4 firm, got a PhD at UW and is now on the faculty at Stanford’s graduate business school.
In summary, the accounting goal can be achieved with hard work.
