Accounting: Does It Matter Where You Go to School?

Hey guys,

So I am an accounting major at my university. I really had a hard time deciding where to go, but I am happy to say that I like my university. Now that I’m a senior, I am wondering if it really matters where you get your degree from; just as long as a business school is AACSB accredited, I’m under the impression that every accounting program will be extremely similar.

I do sometimes think that maybe I would have had a better experience if I went to a different school, but when it comes down to it, people attend college for an education, not an experience. But that’s just it: IS there a difference? Is an accounting major from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign going to be way better off in their career than a graduate from SUNY New Paltz?

Forget money, school spirit, etc. when deciding where to attend college. Specifically for accounting, what should be the ultimate decision maker when choosing, or is money the biggest factor?

BYU is great in accounting and cheap too  you might want to look into their program.

I heard about BYU! It definitely seems like an awesome school for accounting. What differentiates BYU from other universities though? I’m just wondering how people rank one college as better than another.

Keep in mind, I am partial as I plan to attend Uni of Texas as an Accounting major.

The reason is #1 - Uni Tx has a WONDERFUL rep among employers in the state. The Big 4 accounting firms all recruit from here. #2- The tuition is amazingly reasonable for in-state. #3- Texas is a major employer of accountants. This will help me find a job when I graduate compared to a college where there isn’t much demand. If for no other reason than I can drive to an interview in an hour rather than a long car ride or flying.

I would look for one where employers recruit from. This is a big selling point for me.
