I am planning to major in accounting but I have a deep interest in the IT/Business Technology field and I have had a recent liking to the MIS coursework. The problem is that my school doesn't offer double majors through the Business School but only minors. I was wondering how significantly less are opportunities in careers like Accounting Information Systems available since I am using MIS as a minor? Is it even worth it?

Your question seems a little muddled to me. Are you asking if an accounting major with a minor in MIS will afford you fewer opportunities in AIS than a major in MIS?

Sounds like you are saying you are in college pursuing an Accounting major and taking (or considering) an MIS minor, and questioning whether there is value in that. It is a good combination assuming your college doesn’t have a specific major/minor in Accounting Information Systems. And from the little I know about this there aren’t too many places that offer this specific degree (AIS) yet. Focus your major/minor classes towards accounting systems to the extent offered by your school, but any of the MIS classes focused on systems & databases should be good.

I assume you want the accounting major (v. switching to an MIS major) so you are best prepared for the CPA exam, a must if you want to get into one of the accounting firms (at least for accounting work). Even if you don’t go the CPA path, these accounting/consulting firms also handle a lot of systems/IT auditing for companies (SOX compliance, etc.). Having a background in both accounting and MIS will be good for that as well.
