Accounting Majors Best for pre-MBA

If you would like to make a lot of money after receiving your MBA, start by taking a lot of accounting courses as an undergraduate. Accounting is the language of business. Learning how to think like a businessman or businesswoman (MBA) is enhanced by being able to speak the language of business (accounting).

Studying accounting is about as exciting as watching the grass grow on your front yard. A lot of students can't cut it. The best way to study accounting is to memorize every rule contained in your textbook. The rest is problem solving skills developed through practice. Accounting is very detail-oriented so you will need to sweat the small stuff.

Personally, I think the best way to make a lot of money after your MBA is to get into investment banking or related fields like private equity, hedge funds, etc. Those who are successful in those fields REALLY make a lot of money.

I agree that accounting is a tremendously useful business skill.

Would it make sense to double major in finance and accounting even if I had no intent to pursue a career in accounting?

harri, Yes, it would be a good idea. Tough to do, though; but definately a wise thing to do for your career even if you don't go into accounting. If you get good grades, you should be quite marketable.
