Accounting or Economics Major?

Hi! I would really appreciate if someone can help me answer these questions, I’m going to be attending college soon and I’m still not sure which major and minor I should choose.

Does Accounting open up more doors in terms of easier job finds and higher salary than Economics?

What is a good minor that would compliment an Accounting or Economics major? Would Communications be a good minor?

Which major is harder? And if I don’t make it in one, can I easily fall back on the other one without the courses I’ve taken gone to waste?

At the moment, accounting is very in-demand due to recent legal changes. Demand probably won't be as strong by the time you graduate, but accounting is a very stable field in terms of finding work--there'll always be a need for accountants. Becoming a CPA right after you finish undergrad is an even bigger bonus--you'll have a lot of options in terms of careers. Econ is a bit more cyclical than accounting, but there area a lot of different possibilities in terms of careers and--if you do well--you shouldn't have trouble finding a job. Really, you should choose which one suits you more and which one you enjoy more, as that'll be more of a deal breaker than which one opens more doors.

It depends. If you're business program does a good job of teaching you how to communicate well (regular and structure team projects, weekly presentations and regular writing assignments), than communications would be a waste, IMHO. Accounting and economics would be a great combination, as would finance, marketing, information systems and statistics.

One thing I'd like to point out--a lot of larger schools don't have an accounting major, but rather a business major with an accounting concentration. That distinction would make a difference in my decision, as would my career goals.

If you wanted to be really smart about choosing your major, you could call the HR departments and recruiters of some of the companies you think you'd like to work for and ask them what they prefer--econ vs. business. If you want to do anything accounting, though, you really need to do accounting undergrad--an econ degree would be a hindrance. If you're going into finance, the decision might be a little harder.

Eh...that depends on a lot of different things. I can't say how your programs will compare at your school. Accounting, in general, isn't necessarily hard, but can be tricky and very very detailed and a lot of people have trouble with it. I, personally, thought Econ was rather easy (and interesting).

I don't think we can tell you how hard it would be to switch at your school. Speak to your counselors for that.
