Which UCs have better accounting program? I want to transfer to UCSB, UCI, UCR, UCD. I know first 3 school have accounting minor or concentration on accounting, but i think i have really high chance go to UCD. I only know UCD have a program named Accounting Certificate Program. it's that good?

Hey Ken,
I’ve applied at the same schools and I’m doing accounting as well. I know for sure that UCSB is well-known for accounting and a lot of firms recruit from there. UCI offers a minor in accounting and its very competitive. UCR offers a concentration in accounting ( not sure if firms recruit). When it comes to Davis, I’m not really sure. I don’t know if it’s good for accounting, but overall Davis is a top notch UC. That’s why I applied there. By any chance can you post your stats and then I’ll post mine? Since we’re both on the same page I wanna see if I hold a chance. Hope I was helpful!

@Mustufa92 Hey~for what i know about UCSB, competitive GPA (I guess at least 3.4)and pre-major GPA at least 2.75 is very important. Also, finishing english and math requirement by fall will be much helpful. But probably I cant transfer to UCSB because my pre-major classes do not meet the minimum GPA. I heard UCI have accounting minor, but seems like really hard to get in and I am not sure UCI want me. I think UCR is pretty easy to get accepted but dont know how good their accounting program.
Do you know about the CPA exam? it required 150 credit for taking the test and seems like only UCSB,UCI and UCR can help us meet the accounting course requirement. feel like going to UCD not a vrey good choice if I want to take a CPA exam

Yeah that’s the problem I’m having with UCSB. I’m taking my 2nd transferable English course in Spring. Except for that I have finished all the other required courses and my GPA is decent 3.52. UCI is out of reach for me, I’ve heard you need a 3.7 to get in. Now I’m left with UCR, UCSC, & UCD. I believe Riverside would be my choice. Yeah UCR offers plenty of accounting courses but not many firms recruit from there. According to my research, Davis is not a good choice for Business/Accounting. They offer very limited courses in accounting. For the CPA exam you’re correct, you need 150 units and also one year of work experience supervised by a CPA. Some counselors have told me it’s better to get a masters while preparing for the CPA, since only an extra year would be required. Also, the CPA exam is extremely difficult and many fail it so the extra courses might turn out to be helpful. So consider this option as well. Your’e transferring in Fall 2013 right? If so we might end up bumping into each other at UCR.
Good Luck!

Do you know about the UCD extension? they have an accounting program, which can help you finish all the accounting requirement (UCSB seems like can only help student finish most of them, still need to take couple accounting courses after finish our bachelor degree). that is why people say we need to take master program. as you know, if I major in Econ at UCD. i probably can only take 2 or 3 accounting classes in my last two year at UCD while most class are econ classes. However, the UCD extension can help us finish all the accounting courses requirement and no need for taking master program (much cheaper than master program, only like $4000-8000. but master probably up to $20000 or even higher, i am not sure about the number cuz i did not do any research about tuition for master degree). Major in Econ at UCD already help me finish the business courses requirement, and UCD extension accounting program meet the accounting courses requirement of CPA exam. Then I am done with the education requirement of CPA exam.
that just only my opinion, and i might be wrong. also, i think the UCD extension accounting program only help us meet the accounting courses requirement, but everybody know master degree is more valuable degree, and it could help us alot when we get into big accounting company.

I’ve read thru a few of your posts in this thread, and I want to tell you that unless you improve your English skills you are not going to get a job offer from “big accounting company”. I don’t say this to be cruel, because if you are the kind of student that can get into Davis you are the kind that can improve your language skills. So its something that you can definitely improve.

You miss pluralization or pluralize the wrong word, omit articles like “a” and “the” or use them where they do not belong, omit conjunctions, do not capitalize the start of sentences, etc. While I’ve seen much worse, this is still broken English.

At any accounting firm they are going to need you to interact with clients, both in face-to-face meetings and in written communication. Professional demeanor is key. And the examples of your writing above could not be given to a client since broken English does not give the professional impression they charge so much to access. But don’t take my word for it. Make an appointment at your career center and ask them directly about the importance of communication skills, including proper written English.

Yeah I just read about their extension program. It sounds good and they do prepare for the CPA exam. But I would still prefer the Master program if turns out to be cost efficient. Hey let me know your plans though.

I was thinking of transferring to UCD, but still not sure since they don’t have an accounting major. What accountant major in at UCD? I was thinking the managerial economics major but not sure if that looks good to employers since its a little bit of everything rather than a concentration in finance, accounting etc…
