Accounting Salary question

^gotmilk, are you talking about the take home salary or before taxes? 100k is not that great after taxes.

^I’m pretty sure he means the net pay.

100k gross is not bad at all for someone that is 28. Once someone makes manager at the B4, he/she can jump to industry as a manager or director and get a 30-40% pay bump. Only problem: salary growth after that is minuscule.

~65k take home is not a bad salary at all. I think the expectations on this board are our of whack.

I’m not saying it is bad, but not great either. At 28 some people who work at IBs may retire already, and that is what is great. Accontants are underpaid. In addition, it is very rare when people get 30-40% pay bump–usually it is around 20%. I haven’t heard anyone getting hired as a director coming from the big 4 right away. (manager may be) You have to work at least for a few years before becoming a director.

Comparing an accountant to someone who is a SVP at an Investment Bank is not a fair comparison. You are not going to make $750k in accounting unless you become a partner at a large office. Nonetheless, this is not a slight against the accounting profession, rather making 750k is extremely rare.

A manager with 6-7 years under his or her belt can definitely jump straight into being a director.

One of the best opportunities is to stay to Senior Manager and then just into a CRO or CIO position. In that case, a SM will jump from $150-200k to 500k+.

If you want to make millions, then accounting is not the industry unless you want to make partner at a huge office.

This sort of thought is rampant on this board – “I must make HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!!” but I don’t know if posters understand how difficult it is to do this. It is not unattainable but it typically takes an entire career to get to those salaries.

65k TAKE HOME?

Let’s see what I can do with that…

$2,400 x 12 = $29,000 - Pretty fat loft in the city
$1,000 x 12 = $12,000 - BMW 335 + insurance
$500 x 12 = $6,000 - Groceries
$500 x 12 = $6,000 - Keeping the girlfriend happy
$1,000 x 12 = $12,000 - Screw around and do whatever you want money

“$500 x 12 = $6,000 - Keeping the girlfriend happy”

I doubt that is enough to keep a girlfriend happy, unless you just going to walk around and eat ice cream  500$ will only buy you a few meals at a restaurant, if even that.

Lol yes having a girlfriend is expensive.
